Default Head Gasket - What a Christmas Present!

Hi all,

Went to drive my Rover today and after about 5 minutes driving the temperature went right up, obviously I pulled over straight away but it appears to be the head gasket gone. This is a massive kick in the balls after only owning the car just over a week! I'm truly gutted, what a present for Christmas eh. Just checked under the oil cap and there is white sludge, there is nothing in the coolant tank and the the oil is blowing pressure out when running.

Now, with the car when I purchased it was a receipt for a plenty of work that had been done in November (to the tune of £1150!) what do you believe will be the chances of me taking back the car to the garage and getting them to fix it free of charge? Clutching at straws I know but the cars done less than 500 miles since!!

Can't believe my luck, devastated.

Merry Christmas to all anyway, any help greatly appreciated.

I may be wrong but the car has to be in a fit for purpose state. Phone up trading standards to see what they have to say. I'd be inclined to think the garage would have to sort it. I really hope this hasn't soured your 75 experience good luck and let us know the outcome

the first thing you do is take it back to the garage where you purchased the car and see what they have to say..

vehicles must be sold in a usable and serviceable condition, contact trading standards if necessary.

I'm sure motor traders have to offer an unconditional 30 day warranty regardless unless bought as a trade (sold unseen) type of deal

Unfortunately this was purchased at auction. Everything was fine until now, the work was done at a local garage I'm just wondering if they would be obligated to get it sorted as its so soon after going initially...

Generally warranties don't pass with ownership but might be worth enquiring

Also the Climate control is not working, would this be due to the head gasket?

Is it safe to drive a low speeds and short distances or may that cause serious damage.

If you don't ask, you don't get I suppose.

Not likely to have anything to do with your CC not working. Never a great idea to run a car with a head gasket gone but if you're desperate then as long as you don't let it run short of water/oil you should be ok
