Hard to say from the pictures, I'd say that belt is worn, The teeth look a bit scruffy and loosely fitting in the pulley recesses for the belt, the back of the belt is shiny too which is the sign of a high mileage belt.

New timing belt.
It's on the list Trevor. I've just got a new one made by Lucas. Comes with a new tensioner, but no new tensioner bolt.
Also while they're at it I think a new water pump wouldn't hurt. Why would there be a new tensioner in the box but no bolt? Especially when the manual says new bolts must be fitted? Oh well, we live and learn. So what size bolt do I need to look out for please?

coolant temperature check
I'm back from my journey to Wolverhampton.
Set off without setting the test to 19/7, so decided to do it on the way back. After a hot choccy mocha at Tamworth services I turned on the engine and set the coolant test. It started at 61. On the motorway journey home it pretty much stayed stable at 85. Occasionally dropping to 84, and climbing to 86, and 87 on a couple of occasions. Pulling up at an island in Chesterfield it rose to 88, then dropped back to 85 as I set off again, dropping further to 81 between two islands. Stayed pretty much on 85 the rest of the way. Pulled up at home and let it idle. It rose immediately to 90, then steadily to 105 which is when the fan turned on cooling it to 90 in no time at all. When the fan switched off it started climbing again, which is when I turned off the engine and went for a cuppa. The demist check was ok, the small fan switched on ok. I went to Wolverhampton to pick up a set of seats from Anthracite. We then went to his dads to pick up the dashboard buttons. Turns out his dad is Arctic. He had a look and listen to the engine and couldn't find anything wrong. All I can think is that when I heard the wup wup noise, it was the normal engine noise but somehow amplified by a house wall at the side of me. Cos at the time I thought a diesel engine had pulled up behind me it was so loud. Anyway I'm happy that all is, in fact, well. Although I must get round to renewing the timing belt asap. Thanks to everyone for your help and advice so far

just a thought,my camber was making a similar noise to what you have explained.everytime if used to do it,you would notice the revs stop slightly, and when it stopped they would rise again.turned out the camber was too tight.

When you say Camber, do you mean the belt? I only know about the camber in the road
