Dreadful clutch whine when starting to move from full stop
Hi all,
My mother's 1999 2.0 cdti makes an awful noise while starting to move - while disengaging the clutch. Here's the link to the sound it makes: https://www.dropbox.com/s/0iho99ri25...t%202.m4a?dl=0 What could it be? Clutch bearing? How can this be fixed? The clutch has probably never been changed, but other than the noise it makes there hasn't been any problems with it and I'm not keen on replacing it as a whole. Thanks in advance Wysłane z mojego iPhone przez Tapatalk |

The original specification clutches fitted to the diesel powered cars had a problem with this noise taking place. There was a technical bulletin about this. It seems that the springs in the centre plate would be at fault, and replacement is the only cure.
My 75 suffers in a similar way, but only under steep hill starts. This will continue for some time, as mine has but as said, the only cure is to replace the whole clutch system, Centre Friction Disc, Cover, Slave Cylinder and finally the Master Cylinder. This fix will provide many years of good service assuming good components are fitted, also check the flywheel for excessive movement as it will be a Dual Mass Flywheel. Hope this helps. |

Could be the slave cylinder on its way out, in which case you won't have long until that clutch pedal is stuck to the floor.

TECHNICAL BULLETIN - TB0120 ISSUE 2 ENGLISH © MG Rover Group Ltd 2005
MG ROVER GROUP TECHNICAL BULLETIN Model/Derivative: Rover 75 including Tourer MGZT including ZT-T With manual gearbox N o : Date: Section: TB0120 Issue 2 07.01.2005 CLUTCH Title: CLUTCH SQUAWK ON PULLING AWAY Affected range: Manual gearbox derivatives only between the following approximate VINs From VIN RJ 293500 (build date 20.05.03) to RJ 332991 (build date 14.06.04) Description: ACTION ONLY ON CUSTOMER COMPLAINT! The described condition is only applicable to vehicles within the described VIN range. Vehicles outside this range must NOT be actioned. Symptoms: A squawk or squeal type noise may be heard during clutch engagement when pulling away in first or reverse gear. Owner may also report vibration through the clutch pedal or gear lever. This condition may only occur occasionally and on random vehicles. Re-issue information: VIN range provided Action required: Following confirmation of condition, replace the clutch centre plate for new part UQB000380 (see workshop manual repair number 33.10.07). NOTE: no other part requires replacement. This part is visually different to the original part, i.e. the new centre plate has damper springs. The new centre plate was fitted to all vehicles from approximate VIN RJ 332991. IMPORTANT ASSEMBLY NOTES: Ensure that the clutch cover bolts are slackened and removed progressively in a diagonal sequence (as stated in the workshop manual). This must be repeated when re-assembling the clutch cover assembly. If this is not observed, it can result in clutch judder. Before refitting gearbox to an M47 diesel engine, it is recommended that the lower alignment dowel originally fitted to the engine mating face is removed and refitted into the gearbox mating face, this assists alignment and prevents any dowel to gearbox damage during assembly. Parts information: UQB000380 Plate - clutch - driven |

My 1.8 is within that VIN range, and has always made a squeel when taking out with its old clutch. That disappeared after I replaced the clutch two years ago. This clarifies things up. I just thought that the previous owner had abused the clutch... |
