ZT CDTi Fuel return cooler bypass or not?
It seems that my cooler is leaking so do i fit a bypass or replace?
Not had a detailed look yet so could be a pipe etc, but is a bypass a good idea? (Its the cooler behind the rear drivers wheel) |

Probably not a good idea. The un-cooled backflow will warm up the tank contents quite a bit.

A bypass is a bad idea full stop mate, you wouldn't want any fuel returning into the plastic saddle tank without being cooled down. Some serious problems might happen

Warm fuel & a plastic tank I mean what could possibly go wrong
Best not to bypass it either repair or replace.

The fuel temperature is actually thermostatically controlled, by bypassing/ not bypassing the cooler, so as to keep the fuel in the tank at a desired temperature.

Yes, you would just get the full temperature fuel returned to the tank and the further your drove, the hotter it would become, especially if there is not much fuel in the tank to disperse the heat. The stat just diverts it to flow through the cooler, or not through the cooler - thus bringing the tank's contents up to a slightly warm temperature.
