ZT CDTi Fuel return cooler bypass or not?

It seems that my cooler is leaking so do i fit a bypass or replace?

Not had a detailed look yet so could be a pipe etc, but is a bypass a good idea?

(Its the cooler behind the rear drivers wheel)

Probably not a good idea. The un-cooled backflow will warm up the tank contents quite a bit.

A bypass is a bad idea full stop mate, you wouldn't want any fuel returning into the plastic saddle tank without being cooled down. Some serious problems might happen

Possibly a bad idea. Worst possible scenario is summer heat, combined with not a lot of fuel in the tank - which could then become very warm indeed from being compressed.

Likely it will just be a flexible pipe which needs to be re-terminated.

Warm fuel & a plastic tank I mean what could possibly go wrong

Best not to bypass it either repair or replace.

Thanks Guys for the info, Defo gonna sort and no bypass then, Well I say sort it, I mean its a trip over to see Arctic and let the wizard fix it

The chances are that a connector is leaking, just replace or tighten up.
DO NOT remove or bypass the cooler, it is there to perform a vital role, one of cooling hot returning fuel before going into the tank.!!!

it is a safety feature, your insurance policy will probably be invalidated.

The fuel temperature is actually thermostatically controlled, by bypassing/ not bypassing the cooler, so as to keep the fuel in the tank at a desired temperature.

And therefore the cooler's role is vital in the control mechanism, permanently remove it and there goes your thermostatic control?.

Also I would have thought and expensive item like this will not have escaped the money saving measures that Rover instigated when the money started to run out, if it were not an essential safety item.

Yes, you would just get the full temperature fuel returned to the tank and the further your drove, the hotter it would become, especially if there is not much fuel in the tank to disperse the heat. The stat just diverts it to flow through the cooler, or not through the cooler - thus bringing the tank's contents up to a slightly warm temperature.
