Default CDTi Tourer Engine spluttering when idling (warm)

I'm noticing an engine splutter when idling at lights/junctions etc - the revs are not quite down at half under 1 - but it really judders and splutters (doesn't stall). Wondering what this could be? I notice it doesn't do it when the engine is cold - sits perfectly smoothly then - it's just when it's warmed up. This is a daily occurrence.

Any suggestions as to what it could be and a possible fix?

Many thanks.

I'm sure a fuel additive couldn't hurt, you can go as cheap as redex or as expensive as terraclean.

Maybe a crank or cam sensor on the edge of failure... warmth expands the engine block and the gaps increase a tiny amount...

would have thought just effecting starting with the crank sensor though

Won't be the cam sensor because as soon as the engine starts the ECM ignores it until the next start.

Kissy do the engine revs drop as you come to a stop and then recover or does the engine continue at the lower revs after the car has come to a stop?

If it is the former then nothing to worry about.

If the latter then maybe a sticky EGR valve? Worth giving it a clean out.

Mine was doing that, sounded like it was on 2 cylinders at hot tickover, a couple of bottles of forte injection cleaner (one straight into the filter and left overnight) a good hard blast up the M6 and all seems well..... In fact going better than ever :-D

I had the EGR by-pass done and to begin with it seemed it might have done the trick, but it hasn't...

The revs drop when I come to a stop and it just splutters whilst at the stop. All seems fine when I move off again. I did notice (before I had the EGR by-pass) that once when I was reversing, it seemed to drop the revs too much and it stalled, but it hasn't done that yet.

Perhaps the additive would be a good idea? I'm driving back to Spain in the car on Tuesday so I could pop some in and then it will get a good long drive!!

Sorry, but can you (or someone) please tell me exactly what I should be buying, only I don't know what I'd be looking for!!

Many thanks!

This was the one I used:

Advanced-Formula-Diesel-Treatment

They also sell this, which I haven't tried:

Diesel-Specialist-Injector-Cleaner
