Diesel in-tank pump - quick question ...
Changed the pump unit for a new one.
Should i be hearing it every time i turn the ignition - because I'm not. In fact, I can't recall hearing it since it was new (couple of months ago). No funny noises from the under-bonnet pump or anything, but lack of noises coming from under the back seat is worrying me a little ... Angus |

If the cars running ok then it must be working. I think you need to be closer to it, i.e. not in the driving seat. Or maybe the battery in your hearing aid needs replacing?

The engine will run with just the under bonnet pump if there's plenty of juice in the tank. Both pumps must be working or the UBP will be stressed and eventually fail. Best way to check the in-tank pump is to lift the rear seat cushion and put your ear to the floor on the driver's side wile your Haynes Assistant turns on the ignition without starting the engine. You should hear the pump humming for a few seconds and then stop.

Wow - you guys are pretty sharp off the mark (unlike the chaps on "the other side" :lol.
My hearing aid is fine, despite many years of Motorhead concerts and the like. I've been turning the ignition myself, then zooming round to the pre-opened back door and sticking my lug on the seat, but really not hearing anything at all. Absolutely no problems running the car, though we have been keeping it above 1/4 full just in case. The u/b pump sounds fine. Maybe I'm going to have to go through the seat-removal PITA again soon to put my mind at rest. Angus |

To save you running round and round, just pull the connector off the pump, switch just the ignition on and when you are sitting comfortably, lend an ear to the pump as you push the connector back on.

remove fuel cap and listen - you can hear a very high pitch hum from the tank as the pump runs
