MAF does what?
Hi everyone,
My diesel has the synergy tuning box and a similar tuning box that says MAF on it. The MAF box is on the drivers side of the engine bay. What does this do? What setting should it be on? Mine has a twist knob and it is currently in the middle of the marked range?? Cheers everyone |

Maf
You may have the earlier Synergy box, either a TU3 or a Synergy 1. Both of these will have one on/off switch on the module and a rotary selector knob marked 0-9 or up to 10 on the later one. (The Synergy 2 has two on off switches). If you have the earlier type then the unit near the driver could be a Mafam which is used to match a PIERBURGH Maf to your engine. If it is a Mafam then it has a rotary control on the top and should be set somewhere between 1oclock and 3oclock. An original Bosch Maf has a green sealing ring, the Pierburgh has a yellow one but it is hard to see when they are screwed down.

MAF= mass airflow sensor The MAF has a thin wire that heats up. The air rushing past it cools it. The computer measures how much current it takes to keep the wire at a constant temperature. Some MAFs have a temp sensor. Once the computer knows the outside temp and the "wind chill" it can determine the density of the air. It uses air density to calculate how much fuel to deliver

Hi Guys, I'm a new (old) kid on the block. I know the MAK issue is old hat for u2.
But my 75 CDI SE 05 has just gone in for it's second mend because of "excessive turbo lag" no doubt caused by what you suffered. I write to thank you guys for explaining the workings of the MAF system so clearly. Muchas grasseyarse. |

Simple check for an iffy MAF is to unplug it and see if the car runs better without it.
Sounds daft I know but if it is faulty the car runs better on it's default settings.
