Got a fright last night
Driving along the A697 last night at 11pm coming back from the Nationals meet in Malton and a dear runs out in front of me from nowhere. had to hit on the brakes hard and swerve to avoid it. Only missed it by a couple of feet. Luckily, I was kind of paying attention to the sides of the roads watching out for any wildlife that may run out in front of me. I was kind of prepared but it still catch you out! I was only doing around 53mph but slowed down even further after it happened. My heart skipped a beat or two. And if that wasn't enough, about 30 minutes later a rabbit runs out. Luckily, I just managed to avoid hitting it too. I was very pleased when I got onto the main Edinburgh bypass! I hate that road.

Did you take the scenic route?
Funnily enough Kevin and I were talking about this on the way home yesterday.....when it's dark, my eyes start to play tricks on me and I imagine things darting out in front of me. We were on the A66 at the time imagining we broke down ha ha. Thankfully nothing has actually ran out in front of me. Lucky you were taking your time, those beasties can do a lot of damage.

I saw a dead young deer on the A68 near Earlston yesterday on the way home from the National. They can do a great deal of damage, there was bits of broken plastic on the verge beside it. But I am NEVER glad to see the Edinburgh Bypass.

Just as well you had your wits about you Ravinder. A deer can do a lot of damage to a car!

I just put it into the sat nav and it took me on this route. It is a nice road and lovely view during the day. Probably a bad move at night. I think I will avoid it in future at night time. On the way down I saw lots of dead animals on the road and had to dodge them. Shame, we humans have taken over their patch...

Deer move pretty quick when they want to. Scary and natural thing is to try and avoid the animal. At least your heart checked out ok

We get deer on the road outside the cottages, council has finally put warning signs up . . . . for the road users not the deer. Hasn't been one hit for a while.

Sometimes you see one deer cross in front of you - but be careful as they run in herds and those behind the one you have seen will assume it is safe to run and do so straight in front of your car.
So if you see deer - watch out - there are usuallly others right behind Last edited by Darcydog; 2nd May 2017 at 05:20.. |

Reminds me of what actually happened to me back in the early 70's.
I was on my way to pick up the missus from work at Ballochmyle Hospital in a Vanden Plas Princess 1100. A deer jumped over the hedge on my off side, crossed the road and jumped over a much higher hedge on the nearside. Being a bit awestruck I didn't have time to react when a second deer jumped over the first hedge but didn't make it over the higher one and turned back when I hit it. I turned round and went back to find this young deer lying by the roadside with an obvious broken leg. I bundled it into the boot then continued to pick up the missus. You should have seen her colleagues faces when I said I had a bit of an accident and the female was lying in the boot of my car. I took it to the local vet in Mauchline but sadly it died later the next day. Years later I was back at the same vet with our cat and he could still recall the night I arrived at his house with the deer in the boot of my car. |
