Default OBD 2 ELM 327 code readers and MPG

Just got one of these ELM 327 code readers off Ebay. Not really had a chance to get to grips with it yet (think impulse buy really)

Any way does anyone know if you can for a Miles Per gallon read out on it and If so which software will support this.

Thanks

andy

I'm not aware of any data that you can access to be able to compute MPG via the OBD. You really need the injector opening times which are not displayed.

Just realised that you have a diesel so you might be able to do something with the Airflow figures and vehicle speed which are displayed. But you will struggle if it's an early diesel as they were not completely OBD compliant.

must be possible as scangauge can display mpg if supported by the vehicle, our 04 TF shows mpg via scangauge, our ZT diesel which is an 03 doesn't but I suspect later models might

Default OBDII Software

I've got copies of PCMSCAN & ScanXL (very little difference between them) I got my OBDII cable a few months ago & havn't really had much of a play with it, I got hold of several different softwares and the 2 I mentioned seem to have the best interface

You can get to fuel consumption and loads of other stuff via the K-bus which is on the OBD connector but not read by the common scanners.

There is a device for hacking the bus which has been discussed here in the past. I can't find the thread now, I know Keith was highly involved but this is the kit used-

I bought a reader from China and I'm having issues - it reads but does not write/trset the codes. Anyway try ScanTool.net version 1.13 or EASYOBDII. I have both, if you PM me I can fwd the zipped software to you. Tou will need a license for EASYOBDII if you want to reset codes and I haven't managed to get ScanTool.net to reset as yet.
