Default 75 1.8t turbo characteristics

i don't no what these cars are supposed to perform like but mine has no turbo surge in 1st gear and 2nd gear turbo doesn't kick in until nearly 4k revs? which seems to be way to late for anything power-wise as im waiting for revs to climb far to long until turbo is active.

had the car after hg failure and brought recon turbo from midland turbos Nottingham which was fitted due to excess smoke from previous turbo unit?

maybe i expect to much from such a car in which case i may need a remap to get the engine to be more responsive when i need that extra turbo surge for overtaking etc without the wait for revs to actually get there?

if anyone could advise me on these engines character as i dont know whether its underperforming or just normal rover ???

dont sound right at all, it should start to build boost form around 2k revs form anything more then 30 ish % throttle, i would check that your boost control solenoid is working, the mounted on the side of the air box, and also insure all the pipes on it are conected both ends and there is no cracks or splits in the pipes as its very common

As DB69 says the hoses are an easy fix. If you have access to ramps get the car up and you can easily trace the old hoses from the turbo that run back up to the solenoid. I forget what bore silicone hose I used but it's an easy swop and it makes a real difference. Another tell tale sign of a hose leak is a sudden and alarming jolt from the car if you give it some beans.

I have the 1.8T too and although I'm generally happy with the performance mine has the opposite issue. It pulls well to about 4500rpm but then seems to run out of steam. I expected it would pull cleanly to 6000+ but it doesn't unlike my T series turbo coupe I had previously. Is this normal too? It's fine in all respects I just get the feeling it's perhaps not producing full boost?

I've changed the boost solenoid hoses to 3mm id silicon ones off eBay and that sorted a stutter under load but I'm thinking maybe a remap with zandf is the only way forwards.

At standstill it revs freely to 6000 so maybe I'm just expecting too much from a heavy car unlike my nimble tomcat..

You are welcome to come and go out in mine, I am In Aldridge, after I had the mls head gasket done as a precaution i put a stainless cat back exhaust, k&n Apollo intake, Subaru type boost solenoid and finally a Z&F performance remap.

You will at least know if its worth tweaking it.

Try summit Garage on the Himley Road (Gornal, opposite the Bush pub on Summit Place)

They are MG dealers and ex Rover dealers. Very helpful.

Cheers,

Dave
