Yes it really is sad. All the platitudes expressed when they took over Longbridge was taken over; makes it all the worse... it is a blow, especially for those who will lose their jobs.

And people are surprised???

I'll bet it was all part of the original plan and deal! Those involved were never ones to trust unless it was to further their own personal interest.

I would imagine with MG now being established again, they are most probably ready to take on the world and release a whole new range of motors over the next the coming years.

Most probably for them to achieve this, its beneficial to have these cars made in China. SAIC cleverly started production here in the UK, now the best move FOR THEM is to further develop the MG marquee over in China.

Obviously the best move for the UK is to keep production here.

Surprised it hasn't happened sooner and am amazed that only a handful of workers are being let go this time around (presumably those that finish off final assembly). TBH I was expecting them to pull out of sales in the UK altogether being as they've been going for how many years already and hardly sold any. Mind you, I think for an "unknown" manufacturer (and the MG badge fools nobody, everyone knows they're made in China), they're simply priced too high, and there's not enough choice of engines. Had they priced at the same level as Dacia - until at least they'd built up a decent reputation and customer base - maybe they'd be in with a shout, but as it is I've seen loads of Sanderos, Dusters and Logans, but only one 'new' MG on the road in the last month. Actually I viewed one at Motorpoint in Derby about a month ago, and for a car only 3yrs old the paint finish around the window frames of the doors was looking rather worn and uneven.

Of course, I'm sorry for those unfortunates that are finding themselves out of work in the lead up to Christmas, but I fear that unless SAIC is more realistic about their sales here, more MG lay-offs are likely in the next few years...

I must say I wasn't surprised. It doesn't make the news any less disappointing though. I wouldn't be surprised if your comment above is true. So sad. Was such a well loved marque too.

At least thy did something worthwhile the facility and brand for nearly a decade. Twice as long as mg rover managed. That itself has to be commended.

I do hope it doesn't effect UK dealers and sales.

Again the cars arnt right for UK tastes.

If they got an mg3 with a automatic they would have the disability market sown up.

A mg 6 estate with auto and a decent bhp engine (last gen gm units would even do).

The mg 5 looks good when we get it.

MG gs has gotten nothing but positive reviews from everyone I've know that's driven it.

Problem is we are getting the cars 3 years to late.

By then they are forgotten about.

Launch globally and have in sales rooms within a few months maximum not 4 years for the mg6 and 3 for mg3.

This comes as no surprise saic never wanted longbridge in the first place, they had to take it on when the Chinese government forced the merger with nac surprised it's taken this long to be honest as they have far more modern factories back home ,don't think they will keep longbridge for much longer myself. Obviously I feel sorry for those loosing thier jobs .
As for the cars can't really comment as never driven them but they look ok and seem good value for what you get ,reports suggest they drive ok , not in that part of the market myself.

In a previous role, I worked in a number of chinese engine factories, training engineers on the use and maintenance of precision grinding machines.

When you're told that they don't have a torque wrench available and tighten screws using an allen key and a strong leg, it doesn't inspire you to buy the finished product

The Chinese are very good at making things look great, but in only a short time...............

I'm with MarinaBrian on this one.
