Default New key.

Hello, Last year lost my car key, the AA made me a new key and it works fine. I asked him to make me a new chip to go into my spare key, which he did. Now the spare key won't work, Can I get it coded at Timpsons?. Thanks, John.

Hi John, sounds like he just cloned your other key.

After the rolling code in the key has changed a set number of times, the key that hasn't been used will no longer work.

Timpson's found this out the hard way as they were doing this and it came back to bite them in the bum.
As a result Timpson's generally won't touch our keys with a bargepole.

Question

I think I have the same problem here.

I thought I had a dead remote battery.

I took it to the local key guy and he said the unit is working correctly on his bench.

So it appears to need reprogramming. (As per his conclusion)

Given I'm in Australia and these cars are as rare as rocking horse's doo doo how do I do that? (I mean the key, not the rocking horse )

Thanks,

Rod

If it's a transponder chip for the immobiliser you need, someone in the BMW community may be able to help you out. The EWS module (immobiliser) is common with some BMWs of the same era. There's a piece of kit called the "EWS Editor Lite" that can read your module and then programme a new chip. The chips (PCF7935) can be bought off eBay here in the UK, I assume they can be in Australia too?

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the info.

Forgive my lack of knowledge, is it the immobiliser that is the problem or the central locking?

Isn't the immobiliser dependent on the locking mechanism, but not vice versa?

The immobiliser arms and disarms with the key in the driver's door lock.

I have tried the user manual method of pressing the remote button 4 times in rapid succession and turning the key lock in the door 4 times, but neither works.

Also, the lock button in the centre console locked the doors once, and now no longer works either.

Have a read of my posts in this thread, I go over what is needed to program a transponder.

Hi Rod,

This is my understanding but if I'm wrong I'm sure that Russ or Jamie will correct me.

The key contains two discreet units:
  • A printed circuit board powered by the CR2032 battery for the central locking.
  • A transponder which is a sealed small rectangular black block wirth no battery or wiring connections. This enables the engine to be started.

I don't believe so. The immobiliser ECU communicates with the transponder unit when the key is inserted into the ignition switch barrel and not before.

Apologies for the misunderstanding, I didn't realise you were referring to the central locking element. As mentioned by Simon, this is a separate system from the immobiliser and works via the key's remote board and the car's Body Control Unit (BCU). If your key's remote board is faulty, a new or used one can be programmed to your car using TOAF. The fact that the lock button on the centre console isn't working though, suggests there might be something else going on.

Hello, Some of the information is way over my head, but very interesting to read, thank you. If I find someone to code my key, do I only use the newly coded key and keep the original as my spare?. Thanks, John.
