You can splice in at the back - but you won't get the benefit of the car's inbuilt "caravan indicator bulb failure warning" on the instrument display - you'll only get that with the pukka Rover wiring loom. However, the spliced in version does have a warning buzzer to do the same job - but it can be hard to hear inside the car
Your best answer might be to nip in and see Hadrian Caravans at Thornaby Place - they've set 3 of my cars (including the Rover) up for towing, including towbar and electrics and they do know what they're doing.

I'm not sure what they would charge for wiring only - I've always had it done at the same time as having a towbar fitted. They've been there for about 45 years, so they must be doing it more or less right.
I'm up the road and over the other side of the Eston Hills in Guisborough

Hi Mike - I had the buzzer in the boot version - the wiring loom to activate the bulb failure light on the dash is quite a lot more expensive. Ask them to mount the buzzer as near as possible to the front of the boot, and tight under the parcel shelf - it helps you to hear it in the front seat. If you still have difficulties hearing it, let me know - I can dig out details of an auxiliary buzzer and the wiring instructions - costs next to nowt and can be fitted in a few minutes!

I'm on holiday atm , could have pm'd you the car wiring code and the towing electric code if I was at home. At least you are getting it sorted,I have bought stuff from Hadrian before when I had problems, as I was staying at WW Park at the time.
