Project getting back to mgr continues ....

Pektron arrived back (this car hates me), fires and runs but then noooo steam. Shut off and doh lose hose clip. Try again and run for over an hour, temps come up and fan goes in and out. Another day ready for a road test - oil pressure light coming on - arrrrrgh. Waiting for a new pressure switch and oil swap.

Anyhoooo I have some pics of a poor MLS failing (as per original thread) if anybody is interested as the moral of the story for using genuine parts - handily sourced from dmgrs!

Stuck stuck stuck.

This one is a pig. Getting rather hot and the fan kicks in but the temp doesn't come down.

New stat in (someone had gutted the original but it doesn't have prt). It runs up to temp radiator gets hot, fan kicks in - radiator cools but temp remains high and stays on until I chicken out at 110+ish degrees.

Bled and bled and bled the thing - genuinely stuck with it. Any help?

You must have air in the system somewhere, have you bled at the rad, the heater, the jiggle valve and on the steel pipe? Are you also sure the pump is Ok? Chacking this is not much fun, and I would have maybe changed it with HG?
I have heard of people refitting the main front to rear pipes the wrong way round?
My wifes mgf had both fans running constantly when we bought it - after a battery off job it then decided not to run them at all, so they had a bug in the code somewhere, but it doesn't sound like you have this problem.

Thanks - yep it had a new pump on (can never guarantee a new one is fine obviously but replaced). Pipes wrong way round could be a possibility not sure how they should be but either way I'd have thought it would cool. Jiggle in the inlet is fine and monitoring temps via obd so it's a physical issue. I'm down to air being somewhere, heater remains hot which puzzles even more.

What would symptoms of pipes wrong way round be ?

Sorry to harp on but as I asked for help (despite not being a 75 but a fellow TF) I had to reply back with some findings. You won't believe it.

Flow through rad only happens with revs (I put a STD k stat in as the original was gutted and no sign of a prt). It would appear after studying pipework etc the prt wasn't to be found as someone seems to have replaced it with a metal Y piece.

Gobsmacked is not the word!! One ordered, new stat will be gutted and let's see. So so many bodges, lord knows how many people have been told "it's a rover, they all do that."

Final update (I hope).

2 pieces of scaffolding had been welded into a Y where the prt should have been. It has had a eurocarparts prt added with this mess removed and the old type stat I added gutted - voila. A full temp fan kicking in takes 1 min 44 secs to bring it down and peaks at 105C.

I CANNOT believe this level of bodge - it would have taken more effort than a £15 prt. I missed this as I'd given up and would never believe such methods would be applied. Rovers all do that though!!!!!!!!. Peace out people.

Well done pal, slightly suprised at the level of bodging there. The wifes had been maintained at a rover dealer - the subframe was loose, the door window mechanisms were, it had a new clutch fitted when the issue was the release rod, the list went on. Oh, just remembered, one of the rear spring bolts (the m12 one which is in single shear) hadnt been tightened, snapped clean - potential killer..

Blimey, what a saga!
For anyone else having MLS leaking issues, this is worth a read:

They're very good when used on the correct engine, but pick up a cheapie or try to fit it to an engine with sunk liners and you'll have a nightmare.

Haven't visited for ages...touch wood my car's behaved impecably, breezing thru the last 3mot's though I'm now having to spend money as things wear out..tyres,exhaust,steering pump etc.
All I can say is Geesh! why the hell?...well done for finding this.I met someone who came across a similar senario. He was told the stat had been removed because of overheating problems so he replaced it.He didn't realise that it had the prt and that had been gutted. So he'd repaced the blanked off one for nothing.Symptoms of gutted prt exactly as you say, engine quickly overheats though the rad stays cold...the water simply doesn't know which way to go.
Hope this is the end of the chapter...happy motoring
