There's a lot of truth here! ^ I must admit I did like the line "Get a grip" though. So did Alison. She laughed so much some diesel came out!

It's been an amusing thread. As an aside; my life has been a lot easier since I gave up the need to be right...

Me too also! And I don't know if I have mentioned this before, but Alison is fitted with an electric auxiliary heater that comes on automatically when the ambient temperature drops to five degrees centigrade and below.

This is subject to the engine speed (950RPM+) and correct voltage.

It is really effective and makes me feel nice.

2) The 7DegC thing is a lot of horse doo doo. Sorry, but it is....There is literally no discernable difference down to about 0DegC between a good set of winters and a good set of summers. I can certainly feel the difference at about -3 or below...when the summer rubber really starts to stiffen up though.

I still maintain my stance, that 99% of people in the UK 99% of the time, winters are just a pure waste of money. The idea that people in southern England are fitting them where you barely get a flake of snow these days, is nothing short of bonkers.

Even Germans with rear wheel drive Porches that only use them in the city dont bother with winter tyres. Of course the majority do fit them, but usually because they really need them outwith of a urban environment.

Save you money, get an FBH (if you have a diesel!)
On point 1.) I'm afraid you are wrong;

As for the rest, you can do whatever you like.

Er your link just confirms exactly what I wrote. You got it wrong. Only required on Snow/Ice, if the road is clear, even in the middle of winter, they are not mandatory. I should know, I live there.

From reading the article it does say from 1st November to Easter they should be fitted and if you have an accident as a result, well then you are in trouble.

Personally I would think it would be peace of mind and respect for other road users.

For me safety is paramount.

I would follow the website advice though just to be on the safe side!

When should you fit winter tyres?

As the legal obligation to fit winter tyres in Germany is dependent on the weather, it can be difficult for drivers to know exactly when to change their tyres.

German lawyer Tatiana Orfanakou of WILDE BEUGER SOLMECKE offers some guidance: “As the weather conditions can change rapidly, I would advise to avoid problems of being caught out by fitting winter tyres from the 1st November until Easter.

Yes exactly... I agree. However the point I was making (badly) is that there is an element certainly of German drivers, with very expensive cars, who live in the cities, and do not fit winters at all, as they stay within the city bounds where the roads are nearly always clear.

So what I was trying to get across, was that if city dwellers in DE with expensive porsches and BMWs still dont fit winters, then the idea that people in London are adamant that they require them is incredible!

the thing is the nearly all the posts in this thread are from people living in the north

and yes i'm a very firm believer in winter tyres too but i agree they aren't as necessary in built up areas at a top speed of 10-30mph, however venture out of the city limits at your peril

I do agree with what you have said.

The 'A' roads are well gritted and kept clear where I live but venture off and even on frosty mornings the 'B' roads can be a nightmare.

I'm lucky because I'm at home 90% of the time.
