Unable to read fault codes
Small problem. I cannot get any OBD2 scanners to connect to the car. I have battery voltage at pin 16. Earth resistance checks at the plug appear fine. Also voltage on the K line.
Service reset tool working fine. I had read that some tools will not connect due the the wiring of the chassis/signal ground on pins 4&5. Would I be ok to bridge these at the socket to test? Thanks in advance. Last edited by FraserL; 24th June 2015 at 16:51.. |

Should be no problem then. Some of the cheap reset tools have been known to damage the OBD socket pins.

Thanks Mike. Socket has been replaced to eliminate that particular problem.
I try linking the earths to see if I have a problem with them, or, a reader problem. |

OK, tried switching and linking the earths. Continuity tests ok. Reader detects KWP2000 fine. Still getting a link error to the ECU.
A little stumped now |

I tried 3 or 4 of those readers that work via phones/laptops. Never got any to work. So recently I bought one that is self contained, from Ebay. It couldn't make connection with the ecu, tried it on 2 other cars with the same result. So I contacted the seller, and he sent me another. It was actually a newer version. !st try was the same a sbefore, but a wriggle of the plug and it worked! Comparing the dud plug with the new one, the "dud" has thinner pins so probably doesn't make contact.

Both the ELM bluetooth reader and my other scanner connect to other cars no bother. Tried on a 52 plate Fiesta and a 51 plate Mitsubishi Spacestar.

Had a similar problem with my Freelander TD4. The MIL stayed on after an LP fuel pressure fault was fixed, so took it to the local Landy Independent who said it was common and he would plug his diagnostic in and clear it.
Got no communication so came home and checked the OBD plug and wiring and everything checked out. Back up to the garage and still no comms, and his diagnostic kit was working fine on everything else. Left it until I bought a second hand Sykes Pickavant ACR4, and that reset the light no problem at all. |
