Just use a good quality 10w/40 oil. Shell Helix or Castrol Magnatec are easy to get hold of and combine it with a quality oil filter.

Hi I have rebuilt classic cars as a hobby and as a business over fifty years everything from Reliant’s to Aston’s. The answer is the best oil you can afford. The best oil is Mobile 1 0w40 fully synthetic before 1996 it was Castrol Syntrol 0w40 fully synthetic.
I am sure there will be many out there who will disagree with me and many will have there own ideas. Works Lotus use Mobile 1 0w40 with their race tuned K series engined cars, so at least some people will stand by me.
As i say it is best to use the best oil you can afford, it is also very important to fit a high quality oil filter every time you change your oil. I would recommend that you also treat the engine to a quality additive along with its oil, something along the lines of Slick 50. This only needs added every 25 to 30 thousand miles.
During engine rebuilds we always we always treated all friction surfaces with a quality teflon product. like slick 50.
Your engine will be perfectly happy running on a semi synthetic oil of 10w40 or 10w30 i would still give it a dose of Slick 50 every 30k to help with reducing cold engine wear.
hope this helps

Mobil was the recommended oil by Rover
Regular changes of oil and filter are the key to longevity, but I personally never let it get to the Rover recommended 15,000 miles half that for me or annually

As Marinabrian said.

PS. Don't put in any additives as a good quality oil does not need them and is a waste of money.---

Im a bit of an oil perv... so i'd run a 5w-40 Fully synthetic like Millers/Valvoline/Gulf/Mobil/Shell etc especially if you like to give it barry big foot.
Cheaper semi synths can be as much as 1% synthetic and 99% mineral based so watch out.
Personally i'd also move down to a 5w with the colder weather, just helps the engine out when cold as its not pumping round treacle.

I run 5w-40 Millers NanoDrive NT+ in the Merc and Gulf Competition 5w-40 in the MG.
Even the old A4 TDi on 204k gets 504/507 spec VAG oil (highest quality spec for VAG)

www.Opieoils.co.uk

Put your reg! Great site, very affordable too.

Example link for 1.8t 5ltr oil and filter here

oil is the blood of an engine. change it regularly as well as the filter and as said, use a quality oil. when I worked for my dad my motorbike had new oil every 1k miles.
I sold the Honda 400/4 with 115,000 miles on the clock.

my 1.8t is not remapped......yet

I've been using inexpensive......ok....cheap oil - from Home Bargains £10 or £11 for 4.5L - I change the oil more often than i'd be inclined to if i'd spent £40 - I aim for 6 months or 6k miles.

Paul.
