But I never do turn my back on it. My neighbour thinks I am a car obsessive because every time I go anywhere I check the coolant among other things. I even keep a daily log!

I don't know where you get yours mended and serviced but if you don't already I'd take it to one of the highly rated specialists on here, someone who is a rover obsessive. I would t own one if I didn't have a rover obsessive who knows every nut and bolt who can sort out any arising problems

I'm turning into a Rover obsessive myself, for all the wrong reasons. I use the same garage that I have used for many years with no problems at all. He used to own a Rover 75 and loves them to bits! But even he is mystified with this one. If I believed in such things I would swear that this one is possessed by demons!

Just by reading the heading I knew which model you had. Are they that bad? I've read enough on here to make me steer clear. They say the diesels are pretty reliable but I'm needing a gearbox change in the next 2 weeks, a rarity apparently. I'm sure the 1.8 could be trouble free, but not without extensive knowledge and a watchful owner. Me? I just want to drive them, not crawl all over them every couple of weeks fixing stuff. I'd drop it and get a Micra, you must be pretty fed up of Rovers. This post may incur protests, don't care to be honest, fire away, I won't respond.

How can I check that the cooling fan is working? Because come to think of it I have never heard it kick in before it thinks that it is a steam locomotive!

My first rover 75 was a 1.8 and I've had no problems with it at all. Had it for over a year and the only thing that killed it was my ex wife and her rather poor driving skills.

Check the fan is working on the low speed by pressing the demist button only. Start engine with all the A/C off just press demist then look through the front grill it should run continually if it is working on low speed, if not then you need to establish which fan you have three wire two speed fan, or two wire 2 speed fan with silver resistor.

Do this by turning the engine off look through the front grill again at about 2.0 oclock to see if silver resistor is in place or not report back

Sounds to me that you are testing the fan inside the car, i.e the switch on the dash not the cooling fan mounted to the radiator? Read a couple of your posts in this thread and it does sound like you have an inoperative cooling fan which isn't the end of the world.

If your not sure how to check the fan why not join us at the nano and I'm sure the fan can be diagnosed for you. May even get it on the T4 to check it out.
