Cracked Windscreen need info as don't have a clue what to do...
Hello all,
It seems that overnight a huge crack has appeared which starts at the rear view mirror at the edge and goes down about six inches towards the drivers side view. I doubt it will fail the MOT but if it's grown that much over night i think it will be a failure by tomorrow morning (if it grows that is!). We don't have auto glass repair on insurance as it was an extra £20 a month, and didn't think we would need it I've looked at ol' Rimmers and they reckon it is £450 with Rain sensor and fitting kit. Is there a cheaper alternative to this as we are going to France in a month; With pretty tight wallets as it is...what is the going rate for a cheaper windscreen, even a scrappy if we can get hold of one. If we can't I doubt I will be able to see Jean michel Jarre live in Southern France as I know what french police are like even with slight damage to cars been pulled over and fined (not like spain it seems). Its a pig as I've already got tickets at £100 a pop, and its a lifetime event. (especially with the selection of music he is doing at his concerts now). So what are my options if any and how much is it likely to cost...

As Greeners said above find an independant auto glass supplier, they'll be far cheaper than any of the large rip off companies

I'm in a similar position except I didn't see windscreens as an option when I took out my insurance.
Budget Windscreens (on the tinternet) are coming round tomorrow £238. But then they added to it so it's just short of £300. That's cheaper than £450, and then maybe paying someone to fit it. Edit - Nearly forgot, Yorkshire windscreen were doing rain sensor ones for our cars at £140. Don't know if any clips or mastic comes with that though.

A new Chinese screen fitted by a local will be the cheapest bet, with a bit of shopping around I would have thought about £250 especially if you pay cash

you may be able to have the fitter remove the windscreen from the scrap car and fit it into yours. I think the cost for the screen was about £30 from a scrappy when I asked.
the scrappy did say if I removed it and broke it I would still have to pay for it macafee2 |

Had a new rain sensing front screen fitted a few months ago by a local independant outfit. Cost 217 inc VAT all in. Screen made by Pilkington.
Definitely worth shopping around. Cliff
