Still the fastest plane to be operated by the RAF, though only by a smidge compared to the Eurofighter.

Difference being that the Typhoon can go flat out for a lot longer than the 6 minutes (I think it is) of the Lightning.

I think stevenicks & lancpudn mean this one, sadly long gone now.

I used to repair them when I was in the RAF, an amazing aircraft in many ways. To see one take off was amazing, the pilots would get 3/4 along the runway and just stick them on there 4rse.

Those that are at a loose end next weekend might be interested in this

Warning to those of a nervous disposition it will be VERY noisy. the ground will shake and you will go home smelling of jet fuel probably but a proper mens day out. I would suggest you get there as the gates open as it is usually very busy.

The other difference being that the Eurofighter is a highly agile aerodynamic platform with two engines.

The Lightning was two engines with small wings and a cockpit stuck to them.

There's a Lightning and many other cold war era jets at the Yorkshire Air Museum. Well worth a visit.

It also has a lot more range, a Lightning could drink all 700 odd gallons in under 20 mins when reheat was used.

When on QRA duty (Quick reaction alert) they would take off from Binbrook and be in flight refuelling within 15 mins on some occasions. We used to take them to Cyprus most years and the logistics of getting a Squadron of them over there was incredible, they would spend a lot of time attached to an inflight refuelling aircraft so they had enough spare fuel to divert if needed.

I did a camp with the ATC during Binbrooks final years. What an aircraft i believe its still listed as the fastest aircraft to 50,000 feet. Some of the South African lightening are back in the air and an America one is soon to fly.

Britains CAA Civil Aviation Authority stops them flying in Britain. Pity The RAF did not keep one flying
