Default legal? moral? worth it

dropped my mate of to pick his car up from the local (well known and respected) performance car workshop.. and all them came out, their specialisation is exhausts- , now my dilemma is they have never built a ZT exhaust-so they have offered me a full decat (leaving the cat housing in place) and a "hollow" back box- replacing all the rest with Stainless - for the princely sum of £180- question is - is it legal? will it affect the emissions- anything else I should consider before thinking about it?

I think you could fail the MOT if a cat was originally fitted and is clearly missing (though from the sound of it, you'd still have the appearance of the cat with the new system) so it all boils down to whether you can pass the emissions test without it. On a diesel this is easy as they don't test the exhaust gas composition, just opacity, but I think you'd struggle to get a petrol through without a functioning cat in place.

Having said that, cats get very hot and along with the front pipe, are probably the hottest part of the exhaust system so don't tend to rot out very quickly, unlike the (much cooler) rear and mid sections. A stainless system from the cat to the rear would probably be cheaper and no legal worries. Not sure if you'd need to tell insurance or not though.

Best ask at your local MOT station, they should know.

Youll get an engine management light on the petrols due to the lambda sensors getting false readings, diesels are fine with a decat.

It will also be very loud, and may exceed the noise levels with the empty back box. You are better off getting a backbox with the baffles in, and also has Andy has mentioned will get EML on

You will fail your mot on emissions . Diesels get away with decats as theres no emissions test just a visual one, going by your profile yours is a 190 so a decat will fail your next mot.

You can buy an adapter on eBay that screws into your exhaust then you screw the lambda sensor in on top. It moves the sensor far enough so the light stays out so I'm told.

It does I had one, looks like the base part of a spark plug, just screws in then fit the sensor to it
