Turbo Whistle 1.8T engine
Just had car back from the garage for a couple of belts and new set of HT leads. Now goes like stink, was a bit sluggish before. Reputable local garage who specialise in our cars (both guys ex Rover trained mechanics and run 75's themselves so they know what they are doing). All of a sudden my turbo whistles when I decide to hurry things along - only for a few seconds. Mechanic said this was nothing to worry about. I trust these guys implicitly and they have guided my car through 3 straight MOT's over the years, last 2 with no advisories. Anyone think it may be a problem. Sounds quite nice to hear it though.

The turbo will always whistle slightly as the compressor inside the turbo speeds up. This is normal on all turbo engines. It could be that because you're car is now running better, it's spooling up better and quicker hence why you can hear the whistle. If you don't feel any loss of power, then it's nothing to worry about. Whistle can also be had if you have a boost leak somewhere but then you would have loss of power.

A whistle in itself is of no consequence. My Sportage diesel has the loudest whistle I ever heard and pulls better than my 1.8T. Blue smoke is about the only outward sign of a turbocharger breaking down. If there's never a trace of blue from the exhaust there's no need to worry.

Thanks chaps. I should have mentioned the Turbo was new 2 years ago (well recon turbo). To be honest before yesterday I thought it was rather sluggish but now its a completely different animal. I know all about the smoke out the back as I had that when the previous one blew. Huge cumulo nimbus clouds coming out the back pipe!

Your turbo sounds just fine. I do enjoy the sound of a turbo and the turbo flutter at the end. Enjoy the noise.
