Default 75 ctdi temp gauge issue / air con issue

hi all

the temp gauge on my 75 ctdi keeps jumping between 7 and 9 o'clock - it is lower on a dual carriageway, airflow I think

pretty sure it should be consistent at 9 o'clock

I have just had the thermostat replaced so not sure where to look now

I am concerned my garage just don't know the car well enough

any tips would be fab thanks, also can anyone recommend a good garage in kent that knows these cars

also, the a/c is cutting out when the vehicle is stationary - you hear it click on and off but it seems to stay on when you are in motion, not sure what to make of this one, just had it re-gassed as well

many thanks

Don't rely on the temperature gauge, check the running temperature using the obd

Here's a wee video to show you how to do that

Once you've checked it, report back, people will be able to help you diagnose any problems better.

Sadly the original author of that video has removed it. I don't know why. Here's the written version. Look for test 7.0.

That's odd because a low temperature gauge reading more or less has to be a faulty thermostat.

It's possible that they don't know the correct MGR procedure to follow when refilling and bleeding the cooling system. You might have an air lock around the temperature sender giving the inaccurate reading. Here's how to bleed your engine when refilling.

Start by checking that the radiator fan is running continuously when the air conditioning is switched on.

Default thanks all

thank you for the replies

the fan is not going round at all when the a/c is on

i wonder if this could be affecting temp gauge also rather than the thermostat
the a/c also sems to be colder on auto at 16 degrees than on lo

cuts out ontermittently when car is idle

You need to fix that then Rich. The condenser needs forced cooling when the car is stationary and the engine idling.

That suggests that the refrigerant pressure is so high that the trinary switch is disengaging the compressor. This doesn't normally happen when the radiator fan fails. Who recharged your air conditioning? Don't tell me: Kwik Fit?

I doubt it. If the thermostat is working properly then the temperature gauge would never get as low as the seven o'clock position.
