Default Noise at 2k revs

I've had a slight noise for a long time now, but it's getting a little worse. A kind of constant whirring noise when sat at 2k revs and also briefly when passing through over the 2k mark. Can be heard when idling cold at about 1 1/3, no sound at other revs. Difficult to pin point where from under the bonnet. Any ideas?

Does it happen with the A/c on and off.

My previous 2.00 Auto (also a 2000 car) had a sort of whirring noise which didnt change much with revs nor could I hear it over 2k revs but did vanish with the A/c off , ie off or on econ.

Conclusion. Air con Compressor.

Car was sold before noise got bad enough to fix or investigate further.

Does it sound any different with a/c on/off? It could be the aux belts. You can buy belt dressing that you spray on the belts that can queten noises down if from that area. Worse when warm or cold? When turning steering?

I don't think I've had the air con on for a long time. I will check tomorrow though.

Now you've said that, I'm now guessing if it's something to do with the drive belt or anything run from it, then turning the AC on/off will change the load put on the belt and perhaps change the noise. That could give me an clue anyway.

Dressings you say. I've not seen these sprays before, could be worth having even if it's not the cause.

No change in cold/warm, not noticed if on corners. The only reason it does it when idle is beacuse it hangs the revs at the 'sweet spot'. Same again if I hold the revs at 2k (or just under) with the pedal.

The Cats are known to rattle on the KV6, noticable on cold startup, mine does it when its cold.

Just a thought

Having air con on or off didn't seem to make a difference. I may try some of that spray stuff, couldn't hurt.

If the noise is "metallicy" and is isolated to a limited rev range then I agree it could the exhaust/ cat. There is a repair available which basically employs a simple rewelding of the inner and outer pipes just before they enter the cat. Worked a treat on mine.
