Hideous metallic clatter on left hand turns - suspect aircon related
I don't think is related to my most recent under-bonnet fidling, as it was happening before - but it has got worse.
This only happens if I'm in auto climate mode - and not if I'm in econ. I get a hideous metallic noise when going around sharpish turns to the left. It's the noise of something rotating striking something else. It's quick enough not be brake/driveshaft related and it doesn't vary with vehicle speed. It's the same whether in gear and driving the wheels, or clutch in freewheeling. I reckon it has to be either related to the compressor and/or drivebelt, or (and this may sound odd, but I am seriously considering it) something to do with the electric fan blades striking something. One reason I am thinking it might be the fan is that I have a suspect dodgy resistor (although it's recently fitted gold one) and with no time to do a lot of testing etc, I just connected the two end wires together - so that any demand for low speed fan now makes it run at high speed. Since I did this, the fan runs a lot of the time (if climate is set to auto) and that may be why I am noticing it more. Anyone had a dodgy fan or a similar noise? BTW I've recently bought a backup car so I can keep on doing these jobs on the ZT-T but stay mobile (hopefully). Last edited by Ps3000; 14th April 2015 at 19:36.. |

Check the fan and associated pipe work next to it, had something similar on my 1.8 turbo. Mine was quite obvious with the bumper off

Thanks, bumper's got to come off to deal with the resistor issue - what was the problem in your case? did you need a new fan?
I have ordered the stainless bumper bolts and new undertray fixings from DMGRS in readiness. |

What you have done is unwise in the long term. Full motor current will be switched by the low fan speed relay, and it is not rated to cope with that. It is only a matter of time before the relay fails. You will then have no fan assistance until the coolant temperature reaches 112° which is much too hot. You will be putting your engine at risk. The sensible thing to do is to fit an inexpensive gold resistor at the earliest opportunity. Simon

Simon, many thanks, I really appreciate the input, it really was an emergency measure to get me over another weekend when I had my daughter and so needed to be mobile.
I've been running in econ for most of the weekend, so had minimal fan running. I did change the original and dead silver resistor not too long ago (Feb I think) for a gold one, but it's either died or my wring was a bit rubbish. I am going to ensure it's done right this time. I also have a spare car now so the pressure's off a bit (until that packs in at the same time of course !) |

If I remeber correctly there is a pipe that runs along the bottom of the radiator in front of the fan, I think it was a power steering cooler? When cornering the fan was moving and touching the pipe because it was so close, needed moved away slightly. It only occurred on one lock but can't remember which one
