It matters greatly where a hosting company is especially for a profit making company. For several reasons.

If you have multiple succinct connections to a site hosted from US or Japan, expect users to get fed up with slow horrible connections and go elsewhere.

Based in UK targeting UK public, host in the UK. If its your own "wow, look at my family site", then feel free to host where you like.

Try TSOHost, quite possibly the UKs leading web hosting service with prices to match.

I have been using that company along with several colleagues both here and in other European countries since it's inception and have no reason to change. Quality of service is much more important than any other consideration IMHO.
I use .Mac for non commercial hosting, no doubt you will ignore that comment as well.

A lot of Major Companies in UK (Railtrak, Airlines etc) do not use UK Hosting Services.
Even this Site Isn't

Nothing like paying their staff $0.98 a year just so you can have good service

And yes, anything with the word MAC in it is quite frankly, a joke. Its like the Welsh, they just wont admit they are a dying breed!!
