Default battery light coming on intermittantly

Hi,

The battery light is coming on intermittantly on my 75 2.0 CDT diesel usually at start up.

Seems ok when only minimal electrics are being used.

When a/c is running and radio etc the light comes on.

Checked with a multimeter read about 13.2v with engine running and seemed to drop when revved.

Any ideas?

Cheers
John

Sounds like alternator, had it years ago on the way to Wales, charging on idle but not at higher revs.

That would seem to point to alternator failure, but check the battery first - put it on a charger, give it a full charge then check the on charge and off charge voltage. On = 13.8 /14.2 Off = 12.5 /12.8v

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

Thanks the info, thought it would be one or the other.

Anyone got any idea how much an alternator is and how difficult to fit?

Cheers

Checked on E-bay and found this: £129 Re-Manufactured (or recon)
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LANDROVER-...#ht_551wt_1163

Genuine Rover alternators seem to be about 50 quid dearer. Prob worth checking some local breakers......

Not easy to fit, but there is an How To somewhere. I also seem to remember someone fixed their old one with a new brush set.

Has someone spilled oil on it, whilst changing the engine filter?

Hi,

I have just looked at the How to replace the alternator (thanks for the link).
It is beyond my abilities so I am looking for a Rover specialist in the Swansea area.

Not had much luck so far.

The alternator looks fine. I did notice that someone has tried to open the cells in the battery because the tops are chewed where they have taken a screwdriver to them.

Gonna get it all tested on Monday to find out exactly where the fault is.

Will let you know the out come and the cost.

Cheers
