Donations to charity

When you make a donation to a charity, do you think much about what your money is used for, such as wages, running costs, advertising etc?
With smaller charities, the ones you rarely hear of, would you like an email every now and then telling you what has happened?

A few years ago there was someone collecting outside a supermarket for a local animal charity. The suggested donation was £2 which is what I gave. In return they gave you a small badge attached to a card with some writing on.Among other things it said not less than 20% of the donation will reach the charity. I've never forgotten it.My recommendationwould be to send your donation direct.

I think for a lot of people, the amount of a donation that does not go to the charities work or is spent on wages etc is an issue.

That's why I say it's better to donate goods rather than money and take it to them direct.I think the case I mentioned above is shocking.How can someone rattling a tin swallow upto 80% of each donation.

SWMBO donates to all sorts. There is a cotant stream of stuff through to post which must cost more to produce and send that she donates. I have asked her to spare the posties back by getting the charities to stop sending stuff esxcept essentials like donation reminders. I think she has but it still comes. I think she should stop her contributions if so much is wasted on felling trees for paper, postage, printing etc. I dont give to collections but only by online bank trabsfer donation with gift aid. Things like this site and English Heritage are different the EH do send too much junk.

My parents were registered with a charity (can't recall which but it was a nationally known one) and made monthly standing order donations. They got a phone call, some persistent a-hole basically trying to pressure them into donating more. My father hung up. The following day he called the charity to inform them he was cancelling the standing order, woman on the other end said you're not the only one, they'd had a lot of complaints and cancellations! Apparently some genius high up in the charity had the brainwave to hire some marketing company to phone all contributors and get more money out of them but seems it backfired big style.
