I have located a technical brochure for Sachs Nivomat Dampers. I will add it if someone can explain how to load a PDF file.

Is it just case of using the "attachment" facility?

It is likely that the self-levelling shock units were made by Nivomat. They made similar items for other cars, and BMW touring motorcycles.

In terms of their operation, I think a particular shock length is set, (possibly via the relative alignment of two holes). If extra load then causes the spring to compress, and thus the rear to lower, fluid is pumped into the shock absorber's preload reservoir by the natural movement of the suspension until the holes align again.

also, I think that they were only fitted at the rear of the car. (I'm happy to be corrected on this point.)

You are quite correct that the self-levelling shock absorbers are only fitted to the rear
& Only on the tourers

The S-LSA's are partly 'fluid-springs'.!

The rear springs on the tourers with the S-LSA's
are actually pretty weedy
when you compare them with standard 'mechanical-only' rear coil springs.?

The S-LSA acts as Both the shock-absorber AND the 'helper' spring
& as others have mentioned
they are specifically designed for towing & load-carrying
because they 'push-back' against the weight of the load or the tow-ball weight
but
when there is is no load
they act purely as a shock absorber.

Which is also why they're so bl00dy expensive.....! 💸💸💸
