It is not necessary for the thermostat to be inserted too far into the hose, I submerged the top hose in hot ( not boiling) water to soften a little then applied a little thin layer of vaseline to stat and then inserted into hose until it just was past the edge of hose, reassembled and that is that.

Looking at the photos, the stat is rather bent and buckled, so the disintegration seems likely the result of an over rough fitting.

No, it is not...the damage on the body comes from getting it out. Other than that the thermostat looked pretty much like stock with the exemption, that the brass piece was broken off.
