Default Potholes.....!

Earlier today, A34 South Manchester. Friday afternoon traffic leaving town so pretty slow stuff. Busy set of 4 traffic lights and 4 lanes so stay alert and...bang O/S front, there go my teeth fillings! Too late, just caught sight of the hole - maybe 10-12" diameter, god knows how deep. Far too dangerous to stop but no noises or vibration. Got home 25 minutes later and took a look at the wheel - nice big bulge (about 50mm long and maybe 8mm high in the middle) in the sidewall and a touch of an adjacent shiny splodge on the outer rim.
There is 6-7mm on the tread but that's a new 225/45R17Y Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetric and perhaps a crack test on the Meteor wheel (it doesn't appear buckled but I'll need to free spin it just to be sure).
How can I crack test the wheel and has anyone tried claiming off their local authority for this sort of thing, if so what must I do and what chance of getting compensation.

Cool

Take a photo of the pothole, it's location, what the weather was like and pictures of the damage to the tyre and possibly the wheel. Get a independent report about the tyre and wheel and submit it to the council concerned.

Best of luck with that one Bob.......I have a bent 11 spoke with a fubared 6.5mm Dunlop fitted.

Council wouldn't take responsibility because the pothole had not been reported before

Great isn't it

You should have asked when that particular stretch of road was inspected. They have by law to inspect for damage to the carriageway . Any damage found must be marked to prove they have seen it. No marks could mean that they have not inspected that road.

I think (only think that is before you all jump on me) that unless the pothole has been reported previously by someone and is not repaired you will not be able to claim.

Ken.

The local authority have to be aware of it for you to claim.
This is where you may need to get a little cheeky & report it then leave it a few days before logging a claim.

I report them via https://www.fixmystreet.com

Best to get a friend to report it, then there would be no connection between the report and the claim.

not sure whether it is coincidence of they do actually take notice but I've reported a few significant holes using the following website and they seem to repair them within a couple of weeks. https://www.fillthathole.org.uk/hazards/report

Seemed to work when I was living in Oxfordshire and more recently in Portishead, Bristol.

I also tend to report through the local council website too.

Hope you get the compensation.
