Repair to an Air Con Pipe
Hi All,
One of my Air con pipes has a hole in it. It's the normal one that fails due to the power steering pipe rubbing against it. It had happened before I got the car, so not my fault. The car is a Diesel 75 Tourer. Does anyone know if these pipes can be repaired as I've tried and tried to find one, and either the cars that are being broken are petrol or I found a complete set on Ebay, but the seller wont ship them as 'they are too awkward to pack'. I know I'm being tight, but dont really want to spend £100+ on a new one. Thanks in advance. Richard. |

AC leaks and R134 legislation
Problem is the Hole usually is right on the corner Richard!!
Too late for you i know but It's a shame there's still 1000's of cars out there awaiting the simple "cable tie or Velcro MOD" which costs nothing to do and only takes minutes. (Same goes for the "bonnet release divider MOD" too!) The AC runs at immense pressures so pipe repairs are not recommended. We had success in past fitting compression joints on the Rover 800 series where the straight piece of HP pipe right at the front used to corrode through. We used to replace the whole length with a brass alloy pipe (Cunifer) which would then last the life of the Car. Considering the AC Gas legislation and the Ozone layer etc, I find it incredible Car manufacturers are allowed to use cheap alloys that corrode. And in the case of the 75, where we know of at least 2 "rubbing" points (Power steering pipe and the bonnet liner) these should have been factory recalls.

Spooky you got a little camera looking under my bonnet?
Seriously though, yup, it's right on the corner. I was doing a PC install today at a local garage and asked if the pipes could be repaired, and he showed me a cleaver bit of kit that actually compresses special connectors onto the pipe and joins the pipe.... but only on straight bits if they are long enough... a no in all cases on the pipe on my motor. Thanks anyway for your kind words Richard. |
