Jules' posting was a bit late in the day so as it was 32 degrees according to the Discovery today, I thought this needed a bump.

Thanks Corin
They are dropping like flies & Xpart or their suppliers need to get their act together & start supplying fans & other parts @ more sensible prices. So come on Xpart!! please answer our member's needs. This goes for any part really. The lower the price, the more Rovers will be kept on the road. If the prices are kept high in the short term, there will be no owners left to sell parts to in 5 years time as most will be scrapped by then.

Latest update
We've had a few owners in recently who've bought cooling motors from B.O.B. on eBay with "failed" resistors. These were described as "uprated" but on strip down we've found them to be just ordinary Silver resistors which fail in no time !
Morale of the story: Pay a little more and buy one from Jules! Ours come supplied with the Famous 100 Watt gold component pre wired in for your convenience. Included also is new nuts & bolts, cable ties & a free Pair of VITON intercooler O Rings for every diesel owner who buys a motor. (because there's nothing worse than realising you need these after you've stripped the front of your car down!!)

Update from the Boiler room.....
Anyone fitting a Kenlowe & following Keith's wiring changes While the fan will work correctly with the middle relay Not connected, there will be no Trinary Protection for the AC Compressor! (as this is triggered from the middle small relay) And a discussion with Keith confirmed this. The wiring configuration I've adopted is to wire as per the later 2 speed control Box. (ie: leaving the end small relay redundant) ie Cut the purple short. No other wires to swap, in fact no need to remove the Control Box Cover at all.

Update!
Any motor ordered by Diesel owners will Automatically come with a FREE pair of Viton Intercooler Seals. (there's nothing more annoying than having the front end stripped down only to find you need something else!! The seals will almost certainly need replacing & is so much easier to do while the slam panel is off!)

Corroded condensor matrix Trinary
Just an update Gents!
I am finding many Cars now (especially high milers over 90k miles) are requiring new AC Condensers, which I now carry as a stock item with new O Rings! So before ordering a new Cooling fan be sure to check the condition of the Condensor matrix (look through the front grill just behind the Fan blades) If any fins have dropped off/missing, time for a new one as the old one will not dissipate the heat from the compressed gas! Symptoms of an inefficient Matrix will be when AC is selected the Fan will operate on SLOW speed as normal, but after 2 mins or so, switches to MEDIUM/HIGH speed. (obviously owners with duff Fans won't find this out until Fan motor is renewed!) DIY TEST If HIGH speed keeps triggering when AC selected, simply disconnect the Trinary switch.....................if cooling fan reverts back to SLOW speed you have proved to yourself 3 possibilities that will be GAS related: 1. Too much gas in system ..........maximum is 400-450 Grammes 2. Corroded condenser matrix 3. Tests done on a very hot day ie above 25 Deg C, HIGH speed fan operation after a short delay might actually be a normal condition ..........even with a new Matrix. Hope above info is of help, and may save a few of you having to dismantle the front end twice!

I think that is good advise Jules.
I changed my fan a week or so ago and I was surprised when at the weekend (20degC ambient) the high speed on my kenlowe came on within a couple of minutes after coming to a standstill, it didn't go quickly back to slow speed either even though I waited a good few minutes. This surprised me as I thought it would only require a short blast on high speed before going back to low speed (like a 2 speed OEM with duff resistor). Climate was set to 17degC so was working pretty hard (definitely was not engine temp triggered) and my matrix did not look too bad - I cleared a bit of debris which had accumulated but fins looked ok . Even though it wouldn't be a direct comparison due to the different blade designs does anyone know the kenlowe speeds, I have a spec sheet but that only gives a performance figure of 3750m³/h @ 3.75mm wg. I know the speeds are as follows for a 3 speed fan, not sure what they are for a 2 speed OEM fan either? • Low: 250 rev/min. • Medium: 800 rev/min. • High: 1750 rev/min. P.S My air con has never been re-gassed so I doubt I have too much pressure and prior to the original fan breaking I only heard medium speed on a couple of occasions. |
