Diesel Oil Change
I have never changed the oil on a diesel. I believe the alternator must be covered with a plastic bag and rags to prevent oil entering the alternator. How much oil runs out of the oil filter housing when it is unscrewed?

It isn't a great deal and can be handled quite adequately with a handful of rag.

The problem is not when you unscrew the cap, but when you lift out the filter. Remember to change the O ring on the cap, and replace the sump plug washer too for good maasure, if you were not the last one to touch them

dont forget you need a 36 mm socket/boxspanner, to undo the oil filter. it only needs 18lb torque to tighten it back up.

I changed the oil in my CDT tourer today, and on Jules' recommendation purchased a Sealey TP69 vacuum extractor. After pumping the oil out, the remnants in the oil filter were pretty minimal. The rag I put over the alternator didnt have much on it at all.
I can highly recommend the Sealey, brilliant bit of kit! |

I always pump the oil out. Saves getting under the car. There isn´t a leak from the bottom end so I don´t tempt fate. The Stag is the only one I change theplug washer on as the oil filter is best got at from under the car.

Is there a "trap door" to give access to drain plug on diesels or do you have to take the undertray off?

I though draining the oil out from the plug was important as this would remove the "stuff" that had dropped into the sump. Pumping out the oil might be more convenient but not as good......
