Intresting first bid

Interesting first bid

 I'll stick my neck out now and say that however that car is finally sold the price won't go beyond £15k. That is just a silly ask, or a slip of the finger............

Could it be the seller has just put in a very high initial price so they can have some time to fill in/edit/delete details on the advert, at which point they'll lower the start price to something more realistic.

Unless, of course, they really are off their tree... :D

Yes a bit of a high starting price.:panic:

Think the important words are:

This will be a no-reserve auction - please watch

Just below the main heading. In other words its not an auction yet - just whetting your appetite I suppose.

You wernt thinking of buying for the spare parts were you Les??:)

This must qualify as a rare item @ that starting price.

these are the bunch who "I heard allegedly" are doing a lot of shill bidding. Check out the top bidder's other bids as this one comes to a close.... lots of other stuff about them on the forum elsewhere

Can't be certain but the front passenger door lookes as though it has been painted as it looks a little darker shade.

That is an SMC Slough number plate & they were selling them at around £19 to £20K new last year.

It seems 20K is their favourite asking price.

Looks brilliant. The Star alloys really suit the car.
Think I'm changing my mind about the premium grill.

There's a nice blue V8 in SMC with 16k miles for £15,495 with warranty and no shill bidding.

Couple other V8's too on Autotrader around the £14.5k - £15k mark. So, if the one on e-bay is a genuine "no reserve" auction, it shouldn't go for anywhere near dealer prices. £10k-£12k tops?

In the past they start off with bids on day one, but have changed their tactics of late to listing with £20k figure and then open the bidding after a day or two. Bidding starts straight away and pushes the price up to an attractive level on roughly day 3 or 4. Goes quiet for a while and then pushed up near the end to what they are willing to let it go for. Early bidders rarely win if ever. Also, look at the bidders history and you will see they bid on lots of different cars but never win any auctions. Make up your own mind.

In fairness though, cars seem good. It's the honesty of the "auction" process that grips. Plenty of other posts on the Rover Forum ref this.

Anyone know more about it's history? Not sure about the different colour doors too.

I have seen the blue one at SMC's for £15k but it's just to dear for me :( maybe next year I'll get one.

I have watched these people (and others) operate on E-bay for a couple of years (at least) and their routine is always the same, plus their bidders history has to be called into question.

It's not in E-bays interest to stop it, of course, but doesn't it smack of "unfairness"?

palwing
6th October 2007, 15:59
So..bidding has opened and the auction is theoretically on day one of a 6 day auction.

Apparently, there are so many people out there desperate to get this V8 that there have been 14 bids from 8 different bidders within only a few hours of the auction opening and over 5 days still to go. All this activity on the basis of a sparse advert that's not even complete yet! Who are these people trying to kid?

As any seasoned E-bay seller will have experienced, this just does not happen in the "real world".

Bid is already up to £7300.

I predict that the price will edge up a bit from here and then there will be a lull for a day or two at what seems to be an attractibve price (£8k-£9K?). It will then be "pushed up" again near the end.

Watch and learn!

JohnDotCom

Well I've stopped bidding on it now as Shill bidders get my Goat!
I'll get one from SMC instead.
Its because I wanted Silver of course. :D

Good luck John...hope SMC come up with the goods. Guess you have come to the same conclusion as a few others huh? Watch how predictable this auction is.

I will add, the cars seem good and usually sell for a reasonable price, but it gets my goat too how supposed "No Reserve" auctions are obviously rigged.

As someone else said... the thing to do is to bid your max and see if you get it. That way you can't get carried away or get "pushed up".

Just noticed what car you are driving! I woud stick with what you have as long as it's got Rover Rons tuning thingy installed.

More bidding action..Bidder 9 has pushed the price up to just under £8k. With this much interest and 5 days still to go, this should reach £20k easily! :laughing2: :laughing2: :laughing2:

The different shade of the door is quite common in my experience of MGR silver. My ex ZT260, which I bought new, had it and my brother also had the same problem on one of his silver 75's.
As this particular car is 06 reg I believe it will get clobbered with the £400 VED next year

Many of the Starlight Silver 75's & ZT's I've had in, have not necessarily had different shaded panels, but Patchy shading all over especially in the sun light.
It's as if the original paint had insufficient coverage under the laquer.

16 bids and 9 bidders in the 1st few hours of the auction opening followed by a whole day without change. Isn't human nature amazing!!

If this runs true to form, I give it another 12-24 hours before you will see any significant movement again.

It will be interesting to see which of these eager bidders wins the auction??

Can't wait! :D

Don't forget there are many traders bidding on fleaBay for stock including Moi sometimes.

We will only go up to trade price less travel expenses and not a penny more unless very rare! I've bid on 100's of cars not expecting to win them.............but you never know as 1 out of 200 cars bid on do come to me very cheap from time to time:o

I am sure you are right Jules.

Looking at the number of cars in the history of Bidder 1, he is a dealer too hoping for a bargain. That's most probably why he opened the bidding with over 5 days to go and within minutes of the auction opening and has "topped out" at £207. Must have HUGE travelling expenses??

Bidder 3 seems to have stopped bidding at £500 too, perhaps he also travels by Jumbo jet?

As I mentioned before, these auctions smell of a "rat" because they ALL follow the same pattern. Immediate multiple bidding as soon as the auction opens and then a lull (notice the previously predicted lull now) followed by more bidding pushing the price up near the end. The "traders" drop out and poor muggins wins with an artificial "No Reserve" price thinking he was in a fair and square auction.

If you look at their feedback and then research the winners past auction buys, you do not find a load of dealers. This all adds up to one thing in my book. However, this is all IMHO of course.

The thing is, the vehicles seem genuine and quite reasonable. The prices they go for, are pretty good too at times. However, as I also mentioned, it's the "deceit" that gets my hackles up.

If me or you try and "shill bid" when we sell our garage clear out items, we get all sorts of grief from E-bay. However a large comapny making E-bay lots of money gets away with it. It all sucks in my book.

Jules
8th October 2007, 10:14
Agree with all your last post Pawling, I've been watching this eBayer D M for a few years now. I don't get as much time lately to analyse the bidding data so closely like you!

One danger of some of his "shill bidders" is that if the shillers win any of the cars, and they must do from time to time, then he will be forking out £50 to £60 per "successful" imaginary sale! Still, having very few overheads (it looks from his pictures like he operates from agricultural land) he probably doesn't mind winning some of his own stock back!! You often see the same car back on sale even though it was "won" the previous week.

However an alternative reason to the furious bidding in the first few hours of a listing is easily explained also. Many car buyers have "saved searches" set up on eBay and as soon as the elusive model variant you have been looking for is listed, eBay emails automatically 100's of people over the country, so it's bound to generate some initial bidding. I might bid 500 quid on a 10k car just so I don't forget to carry on bidding later on!!;)

Most of the fun of eBay has been taken away though since they started hiding the identities of bidders for anything over £100.

I sell 95% of my stuff with a good old fashioned sensible reserve, but start at a £1 just to generate some interest!

JohnDotCom

WOW, AMAZING! If only I could predict the lottery numbers as well as this.

Yep.. as predicted, a new bidder (#10) pushed the price up from £7950 to £9101. Well, they couldn't risk it going for less than £9k could they?

Shall we have a closer look at the last 30 day history of this newcomer? A guy who is so keen on buying this bargain, that he bid at 02:35 this morning. He must really want it bad??

Item 1 Cars, Parts & Vehicles > Cars > Rover/ MG 1 Seller 1 2d 18h
Item 2 Cars, Parts & Vehicles > Car Parts > Rover/ MGF 1 Seller 2 3d 19h
Item 3 Cars, Parts & Vehicles > Car Parts > Rover/ MGF 1 Seller 2 1d 18h
Item 4 Cars, Parts & Vehicles > Car Parts > Rover/ MGF 1 Seller 3 4d 22h

Item 8 Consumer Electronics > Home Audio/ Hi Fi > Systems 1 Seller 4 9d 2h

The history shows he has been a keen bidder on cars ,but it doesn't look like he managed to win anything. He's been as unlucky as all the other bidders. Let's wait and see if his luck has changed with this auction?

The auction is now within spitting distance of the end with just over 2 days to go. I predict a steady push to over £10k over the next 24 hours and then, let the fun begin!

Jules

Hi Jules

Nope, I hadn't clocked that and most probably quite relevant. I have noticed that most first bids are within an hour of the auction opening. Sometimes within 20 minutes! Amazingly, I have also seen 5 bids within the first hour of a 10 day auction! As if!!!!

I have sold a few cars on e-bay myself, as you have too. How many auctions have you done that have had such a rapid response? This lot have it EVERY time. Sucks huh?

By the way, I like the look of the 4.2 V8 Jag they have for sale. What ya reckon?

I got your reply and will keep my ear to the ground for anything in your area. Works for me! Per Ardua Ad Astra..as they say.

Jules
9th October 2007, 12:08
Jag looks nice. A lot of car for ya money!
Sensible mileage too but it's had 3 owners though

palwing
9th October 2007, 15:46
Phoned my local Jag dealer ref the V8 and they said that their database doesn't link to other dealers, so they would be unlikely to have any details on this Jag. He checked anyway and what do ya know? It was serviced near to me for the 10k service back in 2004. Only thing to note was front tyre wear.

Man on the phone reckons they are pretty bullet proof and servicing is quite cheap. The V8 Jag is due a service every 10k miles and it's overdue one now. The 60k service is £329 by Jag, which isn't bad at all! Biggest cost is suspension parts such as bushes. Approx £300/set fitted. Still not huge though is it?

As you say, that Jag is a LOT of car. Hmmmm....do I really need a 2nd car right now? :o:o:o

palwing
9th October 2007, 16:46
Looks like they are moving the Jag price up. £3k is far too cheap to let a No Reserve car go for. Last one they sold went for £11k ish.

New bidder #5 has pushed it up. Lets have a look at his last 30 day history too, huh?

Any guesses what sort of bidder he is?

Hi Andy...sure is!

My son went to the Argoed and both kids to Myndd Isa juniors. We lived there from 86-91 in Bryn Clwyd. Used to play golf at Padeswood. Looks like we both escaped huh? LOL

Good price that I thought 10650

Yep..as mentioned before. The cars seem reasonable and go for a decent price. When we spoke on the phone we said it should fetch somewhere between £10k-£12k. We weren't far off.

Looks like a GENUINE bidder #12 got the car. Wonder how much he would have got it for if all the other "genuine" bidders had been genuinly bidding for it? If you catch my drift?

Now then, lets see how the Jag does? Ahh...just over £8k. Lot of car for the money. Also a lot of liability?

Will add that with forthcoming road tax hikes, cost of fuel and the "green lobby" having their say, cars that run on petrol doing around 20mpg around town are not going to attract Joe Bloggs unless he is an enthusiast.

If the V8 had been a similar spec 06 Rover CDTi Tourer Auto...who knows ??

Now then, this car has been in storage.
This picture was in the archives of my PC (stored on December 3rd 2006!)

It was pulled off eBay in the last few hours as the bidding was weak.
The seller then was Pioneer Automotive. I asked the seller why? I kept the email as well from a chap called Dean who said "the Sat Nav had developed a fault." Yeh right

All very fishy. Well it's about time some this evidence of shilling and fishy business was exposed in the hope that members on here who are thinking of buying from these people are made aware of the comings and goings between the 2 sellers.

I also have denial emails from the 2 sellers informing me I must be mistaken.
Even though they both made listings of the same silver V8 with the same Reg number. Here is the pic from 3rd Dec 2006!!

Good morning John.

They start all their auctions at £20k for the first few days of the auction.

After about day 2 or 3 , the auction will start for "real" and the starting price will be £200 or so.

However, as we have seen on ALL their auctions, "real" is not quite what it seems.

You will see some bids within hours of the price dropping to £200. The pattern is the same every time. Although the prices they sell at seem reasonable, there's little evidence to show that these are "No Reserve" auctions as me and you might know them.

These auctions are in fact, "manipulated" No Reserve auctions.

JohnDotCom
12th October 2007, 08:46
Morning to you to. :D
I will not buy from this sort of Practice, though I did bid on a earlier one just in case.
Why not just sell it Genuine? Everyone would be Happy then, I will stick with what I consider Genuine Sellers even if it costs me a bit more.

palwing
12th October 2007, 09:01
HI John.

They don't stick to "genuine" because they are a business. They cannot afford to risk buying a car in for say £10k and it selling for £9k.

In order to make it look attractive, they advertise the auction with a "No Reserve" tag which helps sucker the unsuspecting punter in.

However, I will say again. The prices they sell for are reasonable. The Rover V8 sold for nearly £5k less than a similar one in SMC at the moment, which is quite a considerable saving. The V8 Jag sold for approx £4k less than in autotrader, so it's not all bad.

Mind you, I am with you on the honesty front. I would much rather see them list their cars for a "Buy It Now" price so you know what's what. Perhaps that is more expensive? Perhaps they have less success like that?

There is another "dealer" who runs similar auctions and we think there may be some sort of link. However, they have recently started to list with Buy It Now prices. They are currently selling a Renault Espace 3 litre diesel on a No Reserve which was on a Buy It Now for the past week or so. Perhaps it didn't sell and now they are seeing if they can move it this way?

At the end of the day, it's not what I consider to be in the spirit of Auctioneering or E-bay's rules. However, we live in the real world and would be naive if we didnt think it went on.

On the subject of sellers starting a No Reserve at £20.000. I have posted an explanation somewhere, but basically its a temporary figure so they can edit the text before any one bids. You watch, bidding will start at £200 in couple of days. There is always desperation to get things listed on eBay before the weekend whether the item is ready or not!

I have a confession to make…. I bought my 75 from them at the end of last summer. After reading these posts I wish I had looked more closely to how they worked.

However, in my defence, I got the car I wanted. 2lt diesel conn auto with 12 months mot and beige interior.

I needed to purchase this model within 2 weeks because my old car was written off and I needed a vehicle for our holiday 2 weeks later. They picked my up from Reading station and took me to where they operate from. It’s not a garage but more or a couple of barns and their office is on the top floor of a converted barn. They didn’t have any mechanical facilities but some guys with lots of soap and water.

I was able to take the car on a test drive before they would take payment. So if it wasn’t as it said in the add, I could walk away. They never took any security and I took the car out for a run on my own..... very trusting!!

Anyhow, I’ve got it now and still giving me lots of pleasure……

so there you go........ now you know somebody who was 'that person'

It does seem cheeky - but I guess if he reckons it`ll sell for more, as its worth more, or he can afford to sit on it for a month or two, in order to get the 'true' market price - then why not. Its a free economy. £10k does not seem unreasonable....

You can interpret that as Shill bidding or as working in a consortium or whatever.

In reality if the car is ok and you get it for a price you are happy with then that is what matters.

I do wonder why this car has been sitting around for so long as it has been bayed at least twice before in so called no reserve auctions

I put my bid in at 19.06, (No5) and then had to go out, so no chance to watch the bids. If anyone has a 260 with terminal engine failure at the right price I may be interested in buying it.
