trying to make sense of the towing regs for my daughter. She has the new style licence without the grandfather rights, so is allowed to tow only certain things without additional test.
have a diesel tourer auto so weight is 1590 kg, trailer is braked and max gross is 1300kg, total MAM is therefore 2890kg, and trailer is less than 85% of vehicle weight.
so I think she should be legally entitled to tow this without further test.

anyone with greater towing knowledge care to check my thinking :lowdown:

Thanks Mark

Depends on when she passed her test and the categories she has entitlement for - have a look at these -

Hopefully, somebody else will give you a clearer answer.

Sounds good to me, I can't see a problem with it.

Basically;
The MAX authorized weight of the car (not the kerb weight) + the max authorized weight of the trailer must not exceed 3.5 tonnes.

And the max weight of the trailer must not exceed the weight of the car (eg you cant tow a 1600kg trailer with a nissan micra :) )

Thanks, so as long as I can get her insurance, which may be the issue, she can at least tow on licence.
Windrush my son did take the tow test, as he tows some monster trailers at work, was as I remember him telling me, quite a thorough test.

I thought that with a new license you could only tow trailers up to 750kg?

I got my license after 2001 and haven't done any trailer tests etc.

I have absolutely no idea what I can, or can't, tow - it's incredibly confusing!

Luckily the trailer I used is unbraked, but very very small so realistically I can't overload it!

I thought that with a new license you could only tow trailers up to 750kg?If you took your test after 1 january 1997,that is correct,unless you do the B+E
The only license I don't have is the class C,actually I do,but its just a provisional
