Well received my modified hand brake compensator in yesterday's post, (thanks to HarryM1BYT) as it was a dry today, set about getting it done! :)

I followed Artic's excellent "How-to" here, http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=95998 and was very easy to follow. :)

However, I do have a couple of comments to make.

If you are going to this modification, allow yourself at least an hour and a half to do it, as it took me an hour to get the old one out and then half an hour to get it all back together again. ;)

I would also strongly recommend that you enlist the help of a friend to hold back the carpet, when undoing the inspection cover, as doing it on your own is quite hard work. :(

Also, the how to shows doing the modification on a 75 and with the ZT having more heavily bolstered front seats, I found lifting the console quite hard with the seats all the way forward as they catch on the seats and again getting the screws out of the side of the centre console (and getting them back in again) a little taxing, as again, they're much harder to get too! :(

However, a very worthwhile modification, as the handbrake works now on just 2 clicks! :)

Just one last thing though, is there a special knack of getting the lower plastic sills covers back on, as I can get one of the clips to hold the stud on the floor, but not both!

But a big "Thank You" to both Arctic and HarryM1BYT, for suppling this FOC service to Members of the site, both true Gentlemen!

The plastic sill finishers can be a bit of a pig to get back on. No real knack, just as long as you have both slots in the plastic to the correct side of the clips and slot it along.
Make sure the edge of the carpet isn't too close to the clip

Thanks for your reply, but I got to a point with them where I had to go in the house and have a cup of tea, otherwise I would have snapped them in half! :D

I'll let a more someone else have a go at them at the next meet I go too! ;)

No doubt they'll get them on 1st time! :D

The trick is to have three arms, two to press it down and the third to move it along onto the clips :D

A joiners frame cramp/clamp thingummy wrapped with some rag to protect the sill and hooked onto the under side of the sill, to hold one end in place, your spare hand to press the other end down then a small hammer to just nudge it into place.

Its easy to get one clip to latch on, but getting them both on at the same time, then nudging it sideways is so frustrating.

Ronnie, which clips (eBay link perhaps) are they so I can get some spares in before replacing my compensator?

Guess what Harry and I are doing tomorrow afternoon..The ZT has six clicks which is excessive travel. The rear drum adjustment will also be adjusted and balanced at the same time.

Well if I hadn't just come out of the bath and was cooking dinner, I'd pop out to the car and see whether I can prise these clips out and Re-use them!

Will report back in the morning!

I fitted a new compensator for a customer a few weeks ago, trickier than I thought it was going to be due to access! No doubt be easier to do the next one

It does get easier. Mine took about 45 mins. The last one I did took about 30 mins:D

When I did mine I had a couple on bungee cords handy. I hooked one end to the rear of the centre console and the other to the front grab handles and it worked a treat allowing good access!

Well thanks for the Link Ronnie, they were or course completely mashed by the time I managed to prise them out, but this time, even after postage, Rimmers with the Genuine clips works out cheaper! :)

So have gone with them! :)

I think you have your sums wrong there, Mr D.

Rimmers £2.22 each plus postage, Ebay £3.45 for 15, free postage

You checked the forecast for tomorrow :mad:Well we got the weather wrong..:)

Anyway, rear wheels off and the correct adjustment made. The adjustment was made by taking the play up in the drums until the shoes make contact, then back them off a click until the hub runs smoothly. They then are considered balanced, thus when the handbrake is applied they bite at the same time.

The compensater that was removed had about 9mm's of stretch in it and was modified using Harry's welded method.

The result when the lever adjustment bolt was taken up at the lever is a satisfying two clicks,a third click can be made with a hard pull of the lever.

The brake is now perfect after reducing the travel from eight clicks on a steep incline.

Well my "cheap" clips from Rimmers arrived this morning (good service as usual) and now my rear sill covers are now held in place by BOTH clips! :)

Now the moral of this story, is IF another Member sends you a Link for some cheap parts, read the Link properly! :(

Thanks Ronnie, covers now sorted and you did try and save me some money as well!:(
