For the third year we will meet at the Old Blacksmith's Shop in Gretna Green. The owners are happy to welcome us and have said we can again use the grassed caravan parking area to the back of the car park.

They have said this area will be roped off for our use and entry will be through double gates which will be opened for us to gain access.

There has been a large investment in the famous Blacksmith's Shop (over £2M over the last 2 years) and they have recently won the accolade of "UK Shopping Attraction of the Year" at the UK Coach Awards.

Love the award-winning shopping at historic Gretna Green

Gretna Green Famous Blacksmiths Shop has long been associated with run-away romance for young elopers of days gone by and nowadays with the romantically inclined looking for somewhere different to tie the knot. But this historic attraction is developing a great reputation as a top shopping destination with a difference! Winning the title of UK Shopping Attraction of the Year at the recent UK Coach Awards (hailed as the equivalent to the ‘Oscars’ in the group tourism industry) demonstrates that those in the tourism sector are eyeing up the retail offer for those clients with a passion for shopping!

Shopping at Gretna Green Famous Blacksmiths Shop offers ‘experiential shopping’ and to make the love of shopping a ‘must’ for visitors, an investment of over £2 million has been made over the past 2 years to create an environment that will exceed the expectations of the ¾ million visitors who come to
Gretna Green each year.

There is a real sense of retail therapy: it is definitely boutique but on a bigger scale and with lots of choice! There’s a fabulous range of products, including many top brand names such as Hunter, Barbour, Harris Tweed and Lyle & Scott alongside the company’s very own range: the Gretna Green Collection. In addition shoppers are delighted by the long list of unusual products from independent designers and manufacturers from all over the UK and overseas. The shopping environment is full of character with unusual displays, quirky fixtures and fittings: in a sense a retail work of art. This is a shop where sleek meets quirky.

The family behind Gretna Green, the Houston family, have been here for 4 generations. Alasdair Houston, Chairman is very proud of the family legacy: “When my great-grandfather opened up the Famous Blacksmiths Shop to the public in 1886, visitors came out of curiosity hoping to bump in to a run-away bride and groom and to touch the famous anvil, over which so many weddings have been performed. That has not changed but we hope that what we offer nowadays will give visitors a reason to come back again and again.”

The anvil is the icon of Gretna Green weddings and has its own legend: they say that if you touch the famous anvil good fortune in affairs of the heart will by yours! Everyone who visits is urged to do so, just in case!

The family have nurtured this historic building that has played such a pivotal role in so many lives and they have enhanced the destination as a modern day Mecca for visitors from all over the world. From the early days of tourism Gretna Green Famous Blacksmiths Shop has been on the map for many a tour and today about 30% of the visitors come from far flung places such as China, Russia, Mexico and Brazil. For the many who come by car and the 1,500 couples who marry here each year, with their friends and family, it has become a regular destination for staying in luxury at the family business’s award-winning 4 star boutique hotel, Smiths at Gretna Green, which sits alongside the attraction. For shoppers they can lose themselves in the variety of shops including the Foodhall, full of local produce and the whisky house, where rare and limited edition malts can be found first in Scotland!

The family and the team at Gretna Green never stop coming up with new ideas to enhance and to introduce new innovations. This May a new attraction will open: the Courtship Maze, which promises a fun filled challenge. The Courtship Maze is a pair of 20m diameter stone built interlocking wedding bands. With a choice of entrances this challenge represents the many decisions, twists and turns that are part of courtship and nurturing relationships. The Courtship Maze sets the challenge: “Where getting together has never been harder” but ultimately it is about everyone having fun as they wind their way through!

So, if you thought that romance was all there was to know about Gretna Green, Alasdair and his team invite you to think again, come visit and see for yourself!

The good folks at Gretna are rightly proud of the improvements and achievements they have made recently and Lynda from the site has kindly sent me through some additional photographs to illustrate these.

One of the most obvious new features is the Courtship Maze

http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq129/derekosb/Gretna%202012%20Meet/courtship-maze-at-gretna-green.jpg

New attraction at Gretna Green

The Courtship Maze, a new attraction at Gretna Green Famous Blacksmiths Shop is a maze with a difference and great fun for all ages. Covering a space of 70m x 40m, its gabion exterior takes the shape of two interlocking wedding rings, symbolic of its romantic location.

Before you entre the Courtship Maze you will notice two entrances: this is to symbolise the beginning of our life’s journey, which we make independently before we meet our partner. Alasdair Houston, Chairman of Gretna Green Ltd, the family business that owns the attraction is behind the initial idea which led to the creation of the Courtship Maze. He explains the journey through the maze: “Choosing which entrance is the first of many decisions, twists and turns that will either lead to dead ends or to the goal! In the spirit of the Courtship Maze we suggest that couples choose separate entrances and along the way, through various features within the maze, they will get the chance to catch a glimpse of one another; maybe a fleeting chance to touch, even kiss but no opportunity to get together until they reach the goal: the bridge at the centre of the Courtship Maze. For families we see it as a journey of discovery and competition – can brother beat sister or daughter beat dad?”

Early visitors have enjoyed discovering the secrets of the Courtship Maze. Local mum and daughter Laura and Courtney Copland were not sure what to expect from their first visit: “While the Courtship Maze was being built we were very curious to know what it would look like inside. I love the romantic features that you come across as you follow the route of the maze and the inspirational messages. For adults it is a lovely place to explore and for children I think they will love the chance to simply run round and enjoy trying to hide from parents. You also get an amazing view once you reach the centre, where the two separate pathways meet, and climb the steps on to the bridge.”

The Courtship Maze will be open every day from 10am and entry is £2 per person with under 5’s entering free.

Hi Robert,

Depends on how much you want to spend?

The venue has its own Boutique Hotel but it will be a wee bit pricey. I can ask if they will offer a "deal" for a member staying the night before.

Hotel website here: Smiths at Gretna Green (http://www.smithsgretnagreen.com/)

On the cheaper front the nearest Premier Inn is 7.4 miles away in Carlisle and is £44 if booked far enough in advance. Premier Inn (http://www.premierinn.com/en/search!execute.action)

A nice local hotel only 2 miles from Gretna is this one: The MILL FORGE HOTEL (http://www.themill.co.uk/) £77

Or a Days Inn at the nearest Motorway Services: The Days Inn (http://www.daysinn.co.uk/hotels/united-kingdom/gretna-green/days-inn-gretna-green-m74/rooms-rates?partner_id=&hotel_id=12574&campaign_code=&propId=DI12574&brand_id=DI&checkout_date=22%2F07%2F2012&modify=false&useWRPoints=false&children=0&corporate_id&ratePlan=BAR&teens=0&affiliate_id=&altPropId=12574&brand_code=BH%2CDI%2CRA%2CBU%2CHJ%2CKG%2CMT%2CSE%2 CTL%2CWG%2CWY%2CPX%2CWT%2CWP&iata=&rateplan_id=LV0&rate_code&adults=1&checkin_date=21%2F07%2F2012&rooms=1) £60

Wont be convoying to the meet but will show up at some stage .

This will be my last meet apart from the monthly hawes inn meets so we are a wee tad sad about it.
Over the years we had attended meets in england and loads in scotland and i have to say we have enjoyed them hugely.

We have met some lovely people over the years and enjoyed seeing how well you all look after your cars and the pride you all show in them .

I dont regret being part of the club but of late it has soured somewhat for me and my commitment to it has changed .

Wow we've never had so many visitors in one day.
I started to wash the car just after lunch when some friends called in to show us their new TT. Four hours later just as I was getting started my eldest son dropped in for dinner after a run to Oban and back with his bike. Needless to say this also involved his missus and our grandson then number two son with partner and grand-daughter arrive also for dinner.

I think the mince patties the wife makes were the culprit, they are delicious.
Two hours later I finally get the car washed but no time to polish or even dry it off as a friend over from California visiting her mum who is a neighbour looked in for a chat then to cap it off two more friends called.
What a day, I didn't know I had so many friends.

Good job I've stayed off the sauce as it's now almost midnight and I'm off to Ayr to fill up for tommorow as it takes me a bit of time to get the old joints working in the morning.

See you all there, so for you guys travelling south on the M74 keep a lookout for me and take the point so to speak. :smilie_re:

Cheers Jim. Glenn's car just sort of pops out at you in full colour anyway so I thought I'd have a play. Took a few shots from my windscreen mount on the way home.

Glad you liked it, just hope Glenn does too :}

WOW Derek, Im impressed  Nice composition, rule of thirds used, selected colours, mono tone. :)

I thought I was going too fast for you :D

Fortunately the coppers stopped someone else. I saw them in my rear view mirror sitting in the slip road, the blues and twos cam on, 'oh aye' I thought, but they stopped someone else. Phew!

Thanks for organising today.

I made one referal to the OC today ;). I think that was two in total ;) ;)

I saw the police had pulled that Mitsubishi and was wondering as I approached it as their car was obscuring who they had stopped....... ;) ;)

After everyone had gone except Tam, George & myself we had a natter for a further 15 mins & then I set off the scenic way & had a spirited drive via Longtown & Brampton & had really started enjoying myself so I decided to nip down to Ireshopeburn via Alston to see my mate & after leaving Alston just before Nenthead I saw what looked like a 75 in the distance & in a matter of seconds I had caught what was actually Fusilier in his ZT with suzuchrome infront in the blingster, so I ran with the pack until I had to peel off & go my own way. After all the horrible things I said about the car yesterday it redeemed itself with the smile factor:}:}:}:}:}

Throughly enjoyed the day, was great to meet all our cousins from across the border, and also those that travelled from other areas. Was nice to put names to faces as well, had a good wee chat with Tam, and Glenn in his very nice ZT, and a couple of others, and got some great tips on cleaning the car. I think this was excellently organised, and was worth the effort of travelling across from the NE. Will definately do that again.

On the way back I followied Ronnie, and after about an hour, I looked in my mirror, and saw what I intitially though was a boring grey BMW wilth his lights on, then as it speed up to the back of me, looked in my mirror again, and notice it was the 2diesels in a big wide ZT, who had a big smile on his face, in his lovely Big engined 260. Good what a surprise, was nice he joined us for about twenty miles round the scenic route. As I was driving along, I was looking in my rear veiw, and the 260 did have a huge presence on the country roads, and it seemed to handle very well round the tight corners, it was also good looking forward and seeing another very nice car in front. Often wondered, as we went through the little villages, what the locals must have thought, as three vey nice car driving together through the village

When I remember to get the camera out of the car will post up some photo's

Once again thanks for a great meet, and was nice to meet you all

A cracking day out, really enjoyed it. Some lovely motors there and some great photos appear to be about, I like the one that Derek has of me driving home!

I dont have to many photos but will upload them later! Glad TIMS dog found its owners as it seemed happy enough to go home with him......:getmecoat:

And on the way home when I seen the police speeding down the slip road a few miles after yella fella and keithyboy had went ripping past I was surprised to see it was neither of them being pulled over!:D

Thanks again to all who attended and I look forward to the next meet! :drool4:
