I need some advice please, my wife saw this car today and instantly fell in love with it I don't know much about them so am putting it over to those that do lol.
It has 47000 on the clock
Full service history
Head gasket has been done (with receipt)
2 previous owners
It will come with a full service & 3 months warranty
She is having a test drive in the morning so will have to wait and see what happens.
The salesman admitted that it is a bit over the top price wise but it is a very good example.
Any way all advice greatly received.
Cheers
Steve

Well if it's of any help, it's an MGF SE 120, 1st Reg 31/10/00. :)

It Retails at £1,775 at the mileage, so the Dealer needs to sharpen his pencil a bit! ;)

And if I was paying Retail money for it, I'd want the dent in the wing and the scrape on the back bumper doing properly! :(

Which model is it mate? Just a standard 1.8

Forget that, answered above.... ;)

I would say if you can get the price down a bit then it could be a good buy mate

Nice to know that you have some warranty thrown in... If you cant get the price down enough then why not see if they will extend the warranty a little, say 6 or 12 months

Sometimes dealers are more keen to do this as the cost to them is a lot less than to us ;)

Very very overpriced.

My next door neighbour had a P reg MGF in Solar red no rust HGF perfect.

Nothing wrong with it.

He could not sell it even for £300.

He would have given it to me for free but in London there is no parking and we only have one space on the drive.

I stood open mouthed as the scrapyard truck lifted it by dropping a chain through the windscreen and took it away.

Ed:(

He said the wing and the bumper would be done, which is a bonus lol

Looks very nice but as you said that price really is top dollar! Quick tip about the rear screen I learnt the hard way, make sure the screen is warm before you fold the roof or it will split. We got ours in November and as soon as soon as I opened it on fresh cold morning it split right down the middle. Let the heater warm the inside for a few minutes before opening, obviously with the nice weather we're having at the moment this won't be a problem.

You really are in control here. If your wife loves the TF, you won't be short of options - both private and dealer - in obtaining one that fits the bill. That's a lot of money for an X-Reg, regardless of low mileage.

If you can't negotiate a lower price, I don't think you'll have trouble finding another TF for a more reasonable price.

Seriously though... There are a lot of these cars out there, so have a good look round first... I would not be buying it at screen price thats for sure, go armed with some other adverts for local cars that are cheaper, I would imagine you could find some quite easily

The year is a good one, its MY2000, it's the last version they did before the TF came along.

If its a 120 then I assume automatic, which is a bonus for the ladies, as th clutch can be at a funny angle for people with smaller feet.

The ride will be terrible, they bang and crash, no refinement at all, and are terrible on motorways, especially with the roof up, so don't expect a smooth ride i suggest a long test drive.

Fantastic cars though :D and I really want another.

Price is too much though, £1800 or find another for me, messenger had a similar one for sale, not sure if he still does.

Edit> link to car, doesn't say sold, but was some months ago

I think the 120 is the standard 1.8i available as a manual or steptronic.
If it was me, I would go for a VVC version as the extra 25 bhp or so, makes it a better car to drive.

I did around 100,000 miles in my MGF VVC, a good car but do not expect the build quality of a 75.
My one did eat shocks, wheel bearings, track rod ends etc. Never had that on a car before and I think it is underpinned by the suspension system that was used.
Tyres too, due to the hydrolastic system that was either too high or too low, depending on when it was pumped up.

Agree with the posts, this car is well over-priced!

I had a 2001 MGF couple of years ago, loved it to pieces and a great community (just like here).

I did have HGF but if it is done properly and the coolant checked, shouldn't be a major problem.

I did replace the plastic rear window for a glass one (heated), only cost 200 pounds and very simple to fit. The plastic one soon discolours and splits.

Only other observation I have is that, during the appalling snow we had, my MGF was about the only car that made it to work. I passed stranded BMWs, Fords, 4x4s - everything - mine just ploughed through. Must have really annoyed other car drivers stuck as this little MG just carried on going!

Did give me backache though!!!!!!

We are both okay Steve and the F is a cracking little motor handles well with a good turn of speed. Need to keep the cooling system in tip top condition, antifreeze strength and the check the coolant pipes under the car. Also water pumps prone to leaking. Just replaced the timing belt, water pump and tensioner. Plus new pads and discs all round. I drive it more than Jackie:D

A good looking car, I like the colour!

Talking of HGF and coolant, one thing that caught me out, with my MGF, was the coolant pipes that run under the car from the radiator at the front to the engine bay at the back.
They are huge and made of mild steel, so it is a question of when (rather than if) they corrode and perforate, leaking coolant.
Stainless after-market ones are available and a very worthwhile mod.

Hi Bob, thanks for the information re the coolant pipes, if I remember correctly the salesman did say that it had the stainless steel ones fitted already, but it will be one of the first things I will be checking when she gets it home. As my 75 is a 1.8T I am fully aware of keeping a keen eye on the coolant, and I also have a stainless steel gerryT piece fitted to mine:):)
