View Full Version : Possible Norwich meet?

Weso

Hi all,

Have reviewed the lack of events in the Norfolk area thus far.
Have already had forum contact with a fair few norfolk members on varid subjects.

Thought before i start posting for Norfolk and possibly Suffolk members to make themselves known i would air the idea here 1st.

A member has already offered a possible weekend venue....
Basically it is likely to be a saturday lunchtime gathering late September or early October.

I am happy to get the ball rolling and hopefully come away with something we can progress going forward.

Obviously i will be mindful of any conflicting events taking place elsewhere.

Would welcome any advice at this early stage.:}

Thanks in advance

A great idea Mark. I live in Spixworth. As you mentioned, there are very few meets in this area. I went to Flixon last year and a couple at Meldreth, Cambs. I'm sure there are plenty of members in this area who would be interested in getting together. There are plenty of locations around here and I'm sure members from other regions would also visit. I'll send you my details by a pm

I can make most Saturdays from Sept 22nd. Full calendar up till then. Be nice to have a meet in Norfolk/Suffolk. I'll try and get a few from MG-Rover South East to join us, if that's ok.

Thanks your interest,

All noted, venue i am minded to use on the broadland business park has a capacity of about 22 cars and a very family friendly pub just across the road.
Obviously other possible venues also in more scenic locations around the broads etc, will put up a further couple of posts this weekend to gauge the interest. In parellel with this will firm up the venue and obviously a date, won't be before end of Sept.

Got a good feeling about all this...

Will put up another post here this weekend and one on the general forum to try to catch as many as possible.

Thanks your interest thus far and a special thankyou to Shuntis for the possible offer of a venue subject to clearing it with his employer etc etc.:}

Hi all,
Just joined this club and new to this forum lark, could i suggest Castle Acre. It it a picturesque village with a pub and a green in the centre of the village also priory ruins for those who wish to look around. Food is good and i could have a word, to arrange something with landlord, if this ok

Certainly more appealing than my offering which is just a business park car park :P

I've been to Castle Acre a few times, it's a nice little place :)

Certainly a worthy suggestion in my opinion.

Weso

Right gents, - Castle Acre sounds a winner, just off the A47, think in Norfolk we are spoilt for choice, if we manage to get this one off the ground we can always work our way round the villiges and car parks of Norfolk, after all variety is the spice of life.

toms-tourer and shuntis pm coming your way.... tomorrow

Little late to the party but yep, I'm up for this and have a venue suggestion as well! How about the Maltsters (http://www.themaltsters.com/) in Ranworth? They already have a classic car rally every couple of weeks so must be pretty car friendly. Castle Acre's OK, however it will be a bit of a hike for those of use from this side of Norwich (about 51 miles from here). Maybe we should compile a list of attendees and then pick the most central location?

I must admit I wasn't too keen on having a meet in a business park car park!

I'll travel anywhere for a meet. September is pretty full for me at the moment though.

Weso
29th August 2012, 13:07
Some good ideas there, i know the Malsters well, sure there is a pay and display and the pub carpark itself,
Sure between us we will sort something,
Somewhat pre occupied at the moment as my car is in dock with overheating issues:(
Hoping for some news on car in next 24 hours or so, once she is back will concentrate my efforts again.

Keep the ideas coming though, this is the ideal opportunity to do so....:}

Hi Ren,

Based on my extensive research for specialists in our area, if you want a "working" T4 then the nearest outside of the main dealer network is

http://kellyclarkemotorserv.rtrk.co.uk/?scid=29110&kw=6405504&pub_cr_id=5715395971

Reckon could be relatively local to you too,

Mixed press based on what i can find out from internet etc, and i have not used them, but i would imagine plug and play and pay!

ren
4th September 2012, 20:36
Thanks Mark. I did see them as a result of a look on the xpart site. I know nothing of their reputation though.

Assuming I'm digging this right & looking at this thread http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=1351&highlight=obd+scan&page=7
& post 68 it looks like a straight OBD2 read should lots of specific airbag info as there are various codes relating air bag faults in there. So I might try an OBD scan more locally first or get a cheap OBD reader that could be used at Norfolk meets, especially as it takes quite a while to get there. They keep putting long stretches of 40 & 50 in places and it is often much quicker to get to places further away like Lowestoft especially if there agricultural / tourist traffic around.

Sorry for drifting off topic people. Looking forward to a meet.

I have used them and wouldn't again even though he the nearest one to me.
If you just want a T4 session though you should be ok but expect them to tell you about lots of work that needs doing.
If you find something wrong with the car afterwards that was ok before the response is you did it / caused it and close the door on the way out

ren

Thanks for the tip MN190.

Weso

One would hope that a short T4 session speciafically to sort an airbag fault would be relatively inexpensive. I would check on this forum though that any faults shown would be easily understood and allow you to progress. Guess the same applies if you get hold of a OBD reader.

Given airbag faults are relatively commonplace in the used car trade there might be some local expertise already out there, likewise would like to think most garages have the OBD tech in some shape of form.

Based on other posters views though might be worth looking elsewhere...

Hardly sounds like a friendly low cost T4 session with any forum trader i am so envious of, nearest circa 150 miles.

Mark

ren
4th September 2012, 23:33
Quite frankly Mark, i think the situation is appalling. These friendly low cost forum traders should know how wonderful it is to live in Norfolk with it's friendly chilled out people, great scenery, low crime rate and loads else to offer. Surely they must really want to move here. It must be other factors keeping them away.

If I do need a "local" T4 I might see if Wrights of Lowestoft have still got there's. When the wife had a work lease 25 and we lived just outside Norwich we ended up taking it there for all work as Holdens were repeatedly so incompetent. Once we started using Wrights the extra time to go there was easily saved as we didn't have to keep going back for things not done right. Wrights were always excellent.

Dear all,

Just a quick update, re my car, currently off the road awaiting a mobile mechanic to visit from Derby!. Latest inconclusive diagnosis is HGF. A continuation of various painful threads i have posted in the technical section. Car has visited 2 local garages (through necessity) 3 times to investigate overheating. To say i am disappointed with local garages is a understatement.
Whilst now fully prepared for worst scenario and budgeting accordingly, i am hoping an expert diagnosis might indicate something lesser than HGF on a V6.
Interestingly worst scenario is that mobile man will replace belts, water pump, remove heads, skim heads overnight and drive down next day to refit all. He is a trader on mg-rover.org.
This work is taking place on my parents drive in Hingham on friday 21st Sept.
Till this is all sorted i feel i am tempting fate by organizing the Norwich meet at the minute. As soon as car reaches a positive conclusion i will apply myself to task, in the meantime lets try to keep the momentum going we have accumalated on this thread. Should anyone else want to carry things forward in the interim feel free. Happy to assist or take over the mantle again once car is sorted.
Would mention only reason i have not posted to tech section another painfull update is that diagnosis thus far is so inconclusive there is little to add.
Latest garage phoned me with muddled HGF diagnosis expecting me to tell them to scrap it!! Needless to say i am in for the long haul... There quote £1354.84!!
Thanks for reading my tale of woe... Once concluded will post to tech forum.

Regards to all,

Mark:)

Dave (the mobile mechanic) has a very good reputation so I hope he will see you right at the minimum of expense. Glad you are in for the long haul, too many of the cars get scrapped for no good reason.

Sure we will be thinking about one another on the day! Will be in touch soon after hopefully with some good news.
I thought in the absence of any specialist expertise in Norfolk i might as well import some...
His travel costs are so reasonable it makes the exercise viable.
Looking forward to just driving the car again.
Will pm you at some point over next few days

Marina Brian spoke to me about a possible solution if it ever happened to me. He said that sometimes the foam under the seat rots and gives off a chemical gas which settles and is absorbed into the connectors. He suggested pulling them apart, giving them a clean and then to carefully and quickly shuffle the connectors back and forth in an interlocking movement before finally closing them together. He accepts no liability for offering such advice :} You might want to pm him for further information.
I thought it might be of some help.

ren
20th September 2012, 21:53
Thanks Gate Keeper (& Marina Brian). I'll definitely look into that. Very interesting. I'll find some time to pull them apart and give them a good clean with contact cleaner. My carpet and underlay looks decent and dry and feels dry and the sensors look immaculate but chemical given off is a definite possible when you think about how much stuff gets into products these days. I dare say even some carpet cleaner or someting somebody may have used in the past might affect stuff.

I went to one place that thought their diags would work and it couldn't get in. I checked the voltages on the connector with ignition on and off and they were ok according to research from other threads. It did pass the MOT though thankfully because of the postponement again of the introduction of airbag warnings being a fail. I did need 2 indicator bulbs at the back as the orange had deteriorated. Well pleased.

If anybody does need a diagnostic in Norfolk, the places that have been suggested to me (although I haven't tried them as car passed and not had time yet) are...
Richard Palmer, behind the petrol Station on Northgate Street, Great Yarmouth (an auto electrics guy felt sure he could do it).
Norwich Automobile Centre, Beech Drive off Mile Cross Lane, Norwich (MOT guy said he felt sure he must be able to as he had loads of diagnostic gear).

Great so many are interested in a meet and even from our neighbouring counties. Mind you, with Lowestoft & GY sharing health facilities and custody suite and so much joint policing and being in the same diocease and being previously proposed to be incorporated into a Norfolk unitary council it's a close call (hope I haven't caused any offense mentioning that - none intended).
I wanted to go to the Essex meet but would have ended up having hardly any sleep that weekend so felt it would have been too dangerous to go. I be interested in Lowestoft micro too if I'm available.

Hi Mark

Sometimes a diagnostic unit - I think its a G46, gets damaged by people using hair clips or paper clips on it to do a service reset or one side of the connector will not marry up with a cable from the T4. If either of those are the root of problem then you might need to replace the unit with an unused / good used one if the existing one is beyond repair. Check out Rover Ron. You can pm or ring him and he can advise you which OBD reader is best for your car. He is very helpful and is one of the gurus here in Synergy and so on. I am on the phone and apologise for my lack of writing flow. A good T4 man should be able to work through any connection problems just as Marina Brian did on mine.

Mark,

Thank you for the encouragement :} at the moment I am eagerly looking for the postman and courier van as they should be bringing me goodies for TGB. Like the Side Impact sensor, Upper inlet manifold and new brake pad wear sensor. I have one more thing i can try to eliminate the ABS problem and that clean the plug and it's socket on the ABS mian pump unit. After that it's down to the T4 Guru's.

One thing I have noticed is that TGB which started her life in Scotland need some TLC underneath and that the brake calipers are really scabby and the bleed nipples are very corroded. So am thinking it would be best once finance allow to replace them so we start afresh and can keep them in good condition. Whilst this is done the flexy pipes can also be renewed.

We have until next May to get these ship shape ;).
