hello all
my mate has just brought a 75 1.8 turbo on a 03 plate, when it has been left over night when you 1st start it in the morning its really smoky out of the exhaust then after about 2 miles driving it clears up runs perfect and no more smoke till the next morning
can anyone help

could be valve stem oil seals, make sure he keeps an eye on the oil level

Inlet manifold letting coolant into cylinders 1 & 4 and the smoke you see is steam from the coolant being burnt off, any rough running when it's first started?

As you can see from the above posts we need to know whether the smoke is white or blue (or even black).

runs perfect even when 1st started the smoke is white and smells more of petrol than oil and it hangs around rather than disappearing like steam

I'd say from personal experience that white smoke won't be valve stem oil seals.
White smoke usually means water.

just had a chat with him and its not using any coolant its been on the same level since he's had it he has gave it a oil and filter change which has improved it a little will have to go and have a look under the bonnet this weekend,

Im sure every car on the road does that on 1st start up in the morning as its cold and any condensation in the exhaust is being heated:shrug: .

sorry about the late reply he had his 75 done and it was the turbo gone had a new one fitted and its been fine ever since
