About 3-4 weeks ago i was on this forum regarding a drastic loss of water and overheating and after visiting 2 garages they told me it was the head gasket,i must add that they knew my son was going to be doing the job if it was the head gasket so there was nothing in it for them and as i live in a small village i knew the mechanics well and very competent.
As my son was away working abroad for a time i just used the car on short journeys and kept checking the water.
I had to take a long drive today which involved fast motorway driving and being stuck in traffic jams which i thought for sure this would start the engine overheating, but it didn't.I noticed when checking the water in the reservoir that the water was stone cold which i had noticed on other occasions and sometimes the water would overflow out of the reservoir but always cold.
Has anybody have a clue whats going on?

it cant be hgf if you was in traffic with hgf then the car would of overheated within 10 mins,i would try another coolant cap ,the cap has to be able to sal the system so the flow will be there

Thanks Chris i'll get a new cap and see how it goes.
The problem i've got is that the mechanics when they hooked up to their diagnostic machine they reckon the readings definately indicated a blown HG.I've no other symptoms which would suggest a HGF and the car is running like a dream other than the symptoms i stated and i reckon i can sometimes get a cooking smell after a long run,but that could be me being overly sensitive regarding my problems.I don't understand the cold water in the reservoir but i'll follow you advice and see how i get on.
Thanks for your help

If the water is cold after a run, then it points to me that the water isnt circulating, could be a faulty stat or a blocked return pipe to the expansion tank or a faulty water pump but then your car dosnt overheat, whats the temp of the coolant when the engines running and are you getting heat inside the car?

Had very similar symptoms on my s type water pouring out of expansion tank temp gauge constantly at 90 it never over heated local garage change radiator and a valve £1000 car was exactly the same took it back they then had it for a week decided it was the expansion cap at fault so they replaced that car still the same at that point id lost a faith in the garage so took it to a local jaguar specialist 6 miles away he checked the top hose it was cold strait away he said thermastate isn't opening or was stuck open replaced that only £60 job done but the systems were identical to yours

... whats the temp of the coolant when the engines running ...
:iagree:
Brian,

As Mike says, the first thing to do is to activate the instument pack diagnostics to find out the exact coolant temperature. There's a "how to ..." giving full instructions.

Thank you guys for your input.
After a good run the temp gauge is sitting on halfway where it's always been in the past but checking the water immediately after i stop it's cold in the reservoir. The original problem was a loss of water which still occurs but i check it every second day and although it's still losing water it only takes about a 1/2 litre to top it up.
I've changed the stat some time ago so that shouldn't be the problem????
