The diagnosis from garage, Paul McFadden of Motherwell -
Failed Belt Tensioner which caused the Timing Belt to snap which then bent the Exhaust Valves

I'm claiming this under the AA warranty however the AA warranty people are looking for proof of the belts and tensioner being replaced within the required timescale (60K miles or 4 years, whichever is sooner)

This work was done June 2009 following HGF, so I am 3 months within the 4 year cut off date and I have the receipt to prove the work was done.

Tip of the day; Keep your receipts!

Oh dear Glenn, sorry to hear your car is ill! GLAD to hear the warranty has it covered!

Sorry to read this Glen, great the AA will cover the cost. It adds to the theory that belts don't break, associated items around them are usually the cause.

Cheers for the replies.

I've still to forward the receipt to them so they have still to authorise the repair but I cant see why not.

All very nice, but their belts can also fail and most importantly, they are not MGs. !

And all rather more expensive than a TF ;)

Yesterday I managed to get my TF back on the road after being sat for 3months in my garage with the dreaded seized clutch arm. A new Slave Cylinder and a massive metal bar soon solved the problem :D

To be fair to the tensioners I've never personally seen one fail, I've seen quite a few power steering belts snap and wrap around the crank pulley and cause the cambelt to jump

Maybe cars are cheaper in ZA but you could buy a whole fleet of Fs and TFs for the sticker price of any one of those cars and still have change to fit MLS gaskets and stainless steel coolant pipes.

Oh, and as Glenn says, they aren't MGs.

Email was sent to the AA this morning with an attached copy of the receipt. They have contacted the garage and authorised the work to go ahead so that's a £500 worry gone.

Had the tensioner go on my Rover 220 sd, but it was not the timing belt tensioner,it was on the water pump /alternator. We had just come back from Brighton after Christmas, and happened the next day one mile from home. Lucky or what.
Glad you got it sorted. Saves a few quid.
