Are there any benefits to changing from standard spark plugs to multipoint plugs? Not sure if extra cost is worthwhile.

From what I know (which admitadley is sometimes not a lot...) the multipoint spark plugs give a better detonation inside the piston which improves overall combustion. I also believe the plugs fire over a longer period which again improves the chance of all the petrol being combusted which not only gives you slight power gains but also imroves fuel consumption.

What I don't know is if these plugs are backwardly compatiable with engines designed for single-point plugs. ie, does the ECU need to suply power to the plugs for longer or would a normal discharge surfice and then the plug itself performs the multi-point sparking?
