I have looked underneath the car and it seems that the flexible joint has a small fracture and the exhaust box is corroded and this must be the cause of fumes entering the cabin. I don't particularly like working with exhaust systems so I had a quote for complete SS exhaust including flexible joint and decat with options on the exhaust box for 'sport or quiet baffles' at £500 including Vat and fitting this is from the Swansea Longlife depot. Seems a tad expensive but hopefully it will sort out my problems
