Dave,

I would strongly advise you not to fit a second hand automatic transmission. If you search the forum one member recently did this and has ended up with two faulty gearboxes and his wallet several hundred pounds lighter.

What are the fault symptoms which you have? We can help steer you in the right direction.

As I understand it the answer is no, as the gearing will be wrong, however I'm open to be corrected on that.:)

I had this happen on an Omega Tdi, with a 2.5 BMW engine. It was lack of gearbox ATF, when it was topped up was good again :)

don't do anything till one of our auto box gurus has seen this post, they will tell you how it can be fixed without removing the gear box,you may have to get someone to do it for you but it will probs be cheaper than buying a second hand box which could have same probs as yours.

I'm most certainly not answering this as an expert, but I would suggest as a starting point checking the fluid level.

If its fine, then it does rather sound like problems with the reverse piston, which can also lead to drive failure in the forward gears.

But start with the free things - check the fluid level!

Yes, as Lovema75 says, it's almost certainly a cracked reverse piston. This can be removed with the gearbox in place, and is a known weakness for which an uprated part is available. But it's wise to check the electrical resistance of the solenoid valves first (also accessible after removing a cover) since a failure of one of these can also cause similar symptoms. In our experience, nothing else goes wrong with the automatic transmission so a relatively inexpensive repair is all that's necessary.

It's not really a job for a novice I'm afraid Dave. If you type the words 'reverse piston' into the 'search' facility you'll see what I mean from the photos. I would phone around companies who call themselves automatic transmission specialists and ask if they have experience of the JATCo box (it's in other cars as well as the 75/ZT). Of those who say 'yes', tell them that you need the solenoids checked electrically but that you probably need the reverse piston replaced. Tell them that you know that this can be done with the transmission in the car. A good, professional and experienced place should be able to give you a price for that. Don't be persuaded that you need a new gearbox, and don't proceed with anyone who tells you that the transmission needs to come out.

You'll have to be patient Dave because the search will probably be frustrating.
