My sister has the MG ZT-T 180 auto which has been driving fine until yesterday when it didn't want to select reverse to come off her drive. She selected 4th manually which worked and then could get reverse. The car has over 100k miles on it but is otherwise fine. Could this be the start of the infamous reverse piston problem and is there anything that can be done to keep it going? I had suggested a fluid and filter change but not sure how easy or straight forward that is on this car.

This is pretty straightforward, but just make sure that you have the correct specification fluid to replace the old. You should probably complete it within an hour.

Chris, I fear that it could be.
... and is there anything that can be done to keep it going?
Yes; fit a new one! :D They're an improved design to eliminate the problem and can be fitted without removing the transmission from the car.

There's no filter that can be changed as a service item, but you could try renewing the fluid. As Rob says, there are only about six fluids which meet the specification for our gearboxes. I have posted the list in the past.
