If you have a faulty water pump, then renew it! It has nothing whatsoever to do with head gasket failure.

If you give us more details of the 'whirling sound' we'll try to help. For example:
Do you hear it all the time?
Does it change with engine speed?
Is it present with air conditioning on or off?

hi simon
all I know is that I thought it was a sound that's on all the time and I thought something to do with the belts pulley etc,(looking around for quotes )

Can you inspect the auxiliary belts yourself? You're right; a small cut in one of these can cause strange sounds. The diesel is also susceptible to failure of the rubber part of the crankshaft pulley. Check that too.
