I have been to my local Garage for a quotation on replacing timing belts on my v6 2.5 mileage 56000 2003 year. I asked to speak to the mechanic who will be doing the work and i politely asked if he had done them before he said that he has done several Rover V6s recently and that they are not a problem normally 4 to 5 hours approx, and that he will only do the work if the complete kit is fitted along with new water pump.

I would appreciate any advice or recommendations as to safeguard my self as there is a big difference in price. Suggestions/comments may help others who are thinking of doing the same in the future.

I asked for a breakdown,

Labour £120
Belt kit (SFK*) 3 belts pulley and tensioner £144.00
Water pump (KWP*) £42.90
Total 306.90 incl VAT

The next quote I had was for the same work but at a cost of £700.00+ from a well known Rover specialist in the Midlands.

I would say thats woryingly cheap. Does he really know what he is doing?

Its possible to pay about £500 from respected specialists on here, I would think one of those would be a better option.

remarkably cheap labour at around £24 a hour:shrug:, i would re check price parts sound about right but MGR or Gates is worth going for if possible...

In fairness if he has done KV6 belts recently and wants or welcomes the work then all should be well. Assume it's a trustworthy local garage you know etc

I would imagine the belt kit is SKF (as opposed to SFK)

Assuming it is SKF, they're fine although I have a preference towards Gates or Continental personally.

Labour does sound very cheap & I notice no mention of camshaft seals (which would indicate he won't be using the locking/setting tools)

Also, no mention of any camshaft sprocket stretch bolts (of which at least 2 will be required for the rear cam sprockets)

Good news about the fact he'll only fit a full kit & water pump.

Where can i get the above parts from with part numbers, i will ask the garage if they will fit.. thanks for bringing that to my attention...

Skf stuff is oe quality and I have seen their belt kits fitted to cars from the factory so definatly good quality parts. The labour is mega cheap. Must be a mistake especially if it includes vat. Either that or he doesnt know what hes in for

500 quid to do a complete belt change, gives me all the more reason to keep my CDTI and forget any notions of flogging it and getting a V6 :)

No you can save your money for the fuel pumps, thermostat, EGR valve, Intercooler O rings and injectors! ;) :D

Puting aside the difference in fuel consumption and cost That maybe so, but there are plenty of diesels out there that have not any problems with those items at all, mine being one of them

How does that help the OP, who is showing a reat deal of diligence with his question?

As a CDTI owner, I would not willingly compare it to a V6 and suggest that it is somehow a better proposition other than purely on grounds of cost.

You do not need to touch the cam oil caps unless you use the specific MGR alignment kit. Mechanics can and do change the timing belts on the KV6 without using the kits. ;)

You'll find camshaft sprocket bolts here (same as Landrover KV6):

http://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php?xProd=124968

As Stocktake has said, you don't need the camshaft seals as it sounds like the garage won't be using the setting/locking tools anyway.

You'll need 2 bolts for the rear sprockets (there are 6 in total, 2 front, 4 rear but only 2 of the rear ones will be removed)

From my personal experience:

I no longer fit the standard camshaft end cap seals as they have a tendency to fall out after a while (if they are removed, you cannot re-use the old ones)

I use standard camshaft oil seals instead & i've had no problems since (many others do the same)

An update on my timing belts change. I had it done at the garage that quoted me originally. The belts were Gates all 3 of them and I had to order the 2 stretch bolts myself cost £10.00, the pump is a Circoli. The only confusing thing was that he told me he had to remove the sump due some sort of grommet failure when he removed the dipstick?. The part cost £20 no charge to me, the oil was also replaced no charge.
I have posted some pictures so as you can see the condition of the old ones to see what age and mileage does, they don’t really look that bad apart from the drive belt pic 3.

My car is a 2003 with 56727 miles.
While they had it all open I supplied them a new Unipart drive belt also.

The owner did not look too pleased.

Total cost £300
Drive belt £10
2 off bolts £10
= All in £320.00

Can anyone recommend a local garage to do a belt change on my ZT 190? I use the local garage in the village and he maintains a lot of classic cars but having read the thread is it OK to use him or do I need someone more specialist?
Thanks

Before i had the belts done i use to have a ticking tapping noise when cold for about 5 mins till warm. Started the car this morning and no annoying noises at all. I checked the old pulley and idler also water pump for free rotation and they turn but not freely and i can hear the bearings as if they are dry. Maybe that was the combined noise i use to hear. I thought maybe the noises were normal untill the engine was warmed up but know i am thinking it was the old parts.

That is an excellent price indeed and would be very nice if you shared the garage details with us, also don't for get you are more than welcome to the nano meets next year.

It wouldn't be Asif Autos would it ?

There are many out there that change the KV6 belts without issue & without the locking/setting tools.

Personally, I prefer to use the tools as ideally, the sprockets need to be released & allowed to 'freewheel' during the setup of timing with new components.

So, whenever I get a KV6 in, I always use the tools to do the job.

Only my personal way of working & i'm not knocking anyone that chooses to do the job without the tools.
